Vince can resist no longer, finally reaching out to drive Amir through point for four. The sun has disappeared again, wind remaining high, Edgbaston now nicely filled. Those in attendance are seeing England desperately trying to cling on. One more this morning and they will be deep in the soup.

For the good of the England team, for their development, they have to have contributions from numbers four and five. One of them has to get a score in these conditions on day one.

    Rahat 6-1-25-1

Another huge roar from what sounds like a pro-Pakistan crowd as that Cook decision was confirmed. Looking again, Cook's decision to review can only have come from the hope he got outside the line of off stump. Gary Ballance the new man, an edge almost carrying to gully. Worrying times for England.

There's just a bit of seam movement. It catches him on the crease. If you keep hitting the areas, on a consistent basis, you've always got an opportunity.

Cook lbw Rahat 45 (Eng 75-3)

Alastair Cook's fate is confirmed and Misbah-ul-Haq can soon thumb his nose to all of us and say "I told you so". It just looked out as soon as the skipper was struck, Rahat Ali finding some seam movement back in to the left-hander, who was struck on the front pad, on the move. No inside edge, impact umpire's call. Pakistan's morning, England need something from Vince and Ballance.

It's pretty close to me. It's nipped back.

This is a big moment. Alastair Cook is given out lbw to Rahat Ali and, to be honest, looks stone dead. Still, the skipper wants another look...

Working at Windsor Safari Park in the lates 90s sold Graham Gooch and young family a selection of ice creams, to my embarrassment he shortly returned to replace his strawberry mivvi due to a wonky stick which had led to a poor return on the ice cream filling.

I gave Muralitharan some napkins to clear up a drink he spilt on a flight to Sri Lanka once. Didn't get much sleep on the flight due to the constant stream of autograph hunters (and a slightly damp seat).

Sohail Khan is finally withdrawn after taking the two wickets to fall this morning. Mohammad Amir is recalled, this time with the shouts of "no-ball" accompanying pretty much every delivery. Amir will test Vince's urge to play the cover drive, hanging the ball outside the off stump. Patience from Vince. For now.

Cook will be thinking 'this is lovely'. I don't think he's played an expansive stroke yet.

    Cook 40, Vince 9

Alastair Cook will probably still be batting the day after end of the world. Unruffled by the loss of those two wickets, he picks a full ball from Rahat off his toes along the ground through square leg for four. Vince plays his own version, going aerially over mid-wicket for another boundary. Runs and wickets, plenty happening.

Changed a $20 note for Scott Styris in Antigua during the 2007 World Cup. There were a few of the Black Caps in the bar having a quiet beer, they happily posed for a photo but hid their drinks from view. Team orders not to be photographed drinking after Freddie's pedalo incident.

The big Sohail Khan, who doesn't look like he'd be much good at Twister, is playing only his third Test. His last came all the way back in 2011. He's got an action like former Aussie seamer Stuart Clark. Lovely sunshine in Brumingham, Sohail just seaming the ball as Vince feels his way. Sohail has bowled eight overs on the spin - that might be his lot.

That was a good length from Rahat Ali and it just nipped back. If Pakistan get the England captain now, it'll be a terrific morning. The ball is just nibbling.

    Cook 34, Vince 4

Rahat Ali is roared to the crease by what sounds like some young Pakistan fans. Half an appeal against Cook, but that's too high. When Rahat gets too full, Cook shows a pendulum-straight blade to drive through mid-off for four. This time the home roar is deeper, manlier and full of British stiff upper lip.

Conditions look perfect for batting. For Pakistan to justify bowling first they're going to have to bowl England out today.

Blue sky overhead after the break. I'm wondering if Vince has always batted with such an open stance, or if it's a tweak he's made during this series. It can't be helpful for a man who has been so susceptible to nicking off. Rozzer from Sohail, who has bowled all morning. Just enough nip to beat the uncertain poke of Vince.

In a restaurant in Scarborough, I was excited to serve Matthew Hoggard and his lady. The moment got the better of me and I forgot to give them menus. The same weekend, a colleague dropped a Diet Coke down Michael Vaughan, which made me feel a lot better about the whole thing.

James Vince, what have you got? He's facing up to Rahat Ali underneath a long-sleeved shirt and a sleeveless sweater. Behind his stubble he has a very open stance, almost getting into a muddle with Alastair Cook on the hunt for a single on the leg side. In the end he defends a maiden that takes us to drinks. Even first hour.

Sean Wilson: Uh oh! Joe what have you done?

Mickey Wallis: That shot proves the point that no matter what you got last time, you start on zero. Naive from Root (I think we'll forgive him).

Football Fragmento: Really wish Joe Root batted at four. Still doesn't seem right to me him being at three even after his great innings in the last Test.
