Root knew as soon as he played the stroke. He didn't even bother to look behind, simply throwing his head back and turning for the dressing rooms. Looking again, his bat was miles away from his body, the feet on the line of leg stump and the willow dangled very wide. James Vince is the new man. He needs a number.

Joe Root gets one that comes back in and he gets a healthy edge. He's come out playing a shot a ball. He's in such good form, and you feel like everything's going well. But again a little bit of movement off the pitch has done it for Root.

Huge moment. Pakistan have Joe Root and maybe that decision to bowl first will be vindicated. It's another good ball from Sohail Khan, but it's pretty loose from Root. Just back of a length, nipping away, Root trying one of his trademark back-foot drives with the bat some way from his body. Edged, gobbled at first slip. Very early in the innings to be playing a shot like that. Pakistan have two and England's middle order is exposed.

So England's key men are together again, with skipper Cook already looking in the best of order. Too short, too wide from Rahat, Cook cutting for four from the very middle of the middle of the bat. The sweet spot. Changeable weather, cloud and sunshine, umpire Joel Wilson breathing down Rahat's neck when it comes to running down the pitch.

Simon Goodall: I mean, that has to be it for Alex Hales, surely?

James Buxton: Can't help but feel Hales has been pretty unlucky this series, been out to several jaffas.

Looking again, Hales' footwork wasn't up to much. Feet going nowhere, stuck on the crease. Yes it was a good ball, but Hales' technique didn't give him a chance of playing it. Joe Root, runs oozing out of him, is the new man, watching as Cook plays a lovely straight drive for four.

That was a great delivery, down the channel, on a good length. He makes Hales poke at it. Pakistan have just got the ball shaping a bit. They've got it just about kissing the surface.

Gone! Pakistan finally get it right and Alex Hales is on his way. After Rahat Ali worked over Alastair Cook, Sohail Khan has serves up a rozzer to Hales that is feathered behind. In-between length, just nipping away, not a lot that the England opener can do. Very well bowled.

Dan Gee: I used to steward at Cardiff. Held Malinga's stuff while he did autographs for everyone who waited. Class act.

I'm with Michael Vaughan here. Admittedly we're only half an hour in, but England have had few problems so far. Rahat Ali on to replace Mohammad Amir, serving up a long hop that Cook cuts for four, but after that it's very threatening. A jaffa goes past the outside edge, then a nip-backer takes the inside edge and goes for four. Better from Pakistan.

Finally, that's nice from Sohail, a trimmer beating the grope of Alex Hales. Then an outside edge, but it falls short of where fourth slip would have been and runs for four to third man. The deck looks slow, so those edges might not carry. The hum from the crowd has gone up a notch.

At what point might Misbah start to regret not batting first? The ball has been better behaved than a child on Christmas Eve, the sun is just putting its face on before coming out and the deck looks honest. Amir gets on to Hales' hips, with the ball being turned to the square-leg fence and a man in a pink dress. After winning the toss and fielding it's taken Pakistan only half an hour to post a deep square leg.

I was barman on duty for the touring Australians at their hotel in 1993 when David Boon was on a century not out overnight. There was no busier man in the country than me at the time. They declared on 653-4 so I guess I must have helped somehow.

A female Pakistan fan, long hair and cap, takes a selfie as Sohail plods in. The bowler asks the question against Alastair Cook, then is stunned when Bruce Oxenford (without his shield) turns it down. Misbah comes for a chat, but a lengthy debate decides against the review. Cook got an inside edge, it looked to have struck him outside the line and I think it was missing off stump. Other than that it was a good shout.

The sun has popped away again, with the wind now lively enough to rustle through the players' shirts. Amir hustles towards a stand that is full, angling the ball across tall right-hander Hales. Setting him up for the one that comes back? If he isn't - and the ball isn't swinging - Misbah might start to worry about that decision he made at the toss.
