A needle cup tie in the Victoria Park evening cricket league saw us take on our bitter rivals. Much like their football namesake, nobody loved them and they didn't care. I neither batted or bowled but defending a small total, I chased to deep third man, turned and threw down the stumps as they went for a third run. Not-out was the call from their umpire. Chaos ensued with our keeper (and the league treasurer) pulling out the stumps and brandishing at the batsmen & umpire as he clearly had a different perspective. The game eventually continued with more arguments and an eventual close win. There were no handshakes. A teenager playing with the opposition is still playing first-class cricket for Derbyshire. Still makes me smile when I see him on TV.

And we have our first sight of spin, after only five overs, as slow left-armer Shakid-al-Hasan is brought into the attack. Billings is down the track first ball, then Vince slashes a drive wide of slip for four. These two don't look like they're going to be blocking it.

Playing an evening midweek league game in one of the rougher parts of Swansea and a couple of blokes who’d clearly been drinking all afternoon were watching the game from a block of flats. The flat had a balcony and about halfway through the match, they pulled out a catapult and started launching cans of beer at the fielder down at long on/third man. It all kicked off when both teams started engaging in some verbals with them, and the game was abandoned as a draw in haste!

Beautiful from Billings. A perfectly decent delivery from Mortaza - if anything it's too short rather than too full - is driven on the up through extra-cover for four, albeit thanks to a rather messy piece of fielding. Oooh, there's almost a run-out... Billings turns at the non-striker's end as he looks for a second run to third man, but bumps straight into a wandering Mortaza. Vince has to scamper back to make his ground, the throw is wild anyway, and words are exchanged. As if there wasn't enough tension already between these sides after the second match...

As a footnote, Vince unfurls a wonderful straight drive for his second four of the innings. Nine off the over.

Was 18 at the time and had a date arranged with the senior captain's daughter. Was umpiring and the ball goes through to the keeper with a huge appeal for a catch behind. I think I've heard something so trigger him and he promptly storms off and trashes the changing room. Also, his daughter never returned my calls after that day. Never had that date. The one that got away.

Billings is doing his best Aravinda de Silva impression, working Shafiul wristily round the corner for another couple. He then goes all Ricky Ponting with a pull that brings him only a single. Maybe a career in cricket impersonations beckons.

    Vince 7, Billings 6

No-one could accuse Billings of not playing his natural game here, advancing down to the pace of Mortaza and then cutting powerfully. Only problem is he connects with neither. That's better - two off his hip to fine-leg, courtesy of some smart running, then a scampered back-foot force for a single. Busy cricket.

Simon Farrar: Opposition fought each other during tea. Bats wielded. They had 6 fielders during Police intervention but still won.

Josh Withers: An opponent refused to leave caught behind. As he stayed our keeper 'politely' asked him to leave. Cue gloves off and argy bargy.

Billings, opening the batting in place of the injured Jason Roy, is down the pitch to the first ball he faces, a leg-side wide from Shafiul Islam. He gets a couple of gimmes on his pads to open his account before Vince pierces the field with a square drive when Shafiul offers width. Better from England.

Death bowling has been poor of late. Momentum is a huge thing in one dayers - Bangladesh had it last game and they have it again. Wouldn't be surprised if we lose a few early ones with Bangladesh spirits high.

Mortaza, short-sleeved shirt untucked at the waist (my old under-15s coach wouldn't have stood for that), is on the money from the off. Nothing loose for Vince, who ends the over with a drive straight to cover point. Maiden.

Thanks JL. Sam Billings and James Vince stride out for England, with the mandatory touch of the gloves. Vince to face. Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has the ball in hand. 278 to win. Let's do this.

Billings and Vince are on their way out to the centre, they look happy enough at this stage, but to see how they fare I hand you to a man who has seen off many a new ball attack, Justin Goulding.

This will be a tough chase for England considering they have a new opening partnership. With no Roy or Hales, Vince and Billings are going to have to try and give England a strong platform. The ball is turning and don't be surprised to see Bangladesh attack England with spin early."

Simon Dancer: Well this looks a winning score. But as usual with this dodgy England batting they might get them easily. Or get out for nowt.

Rob Carrick: What a woeful bowling display from the seamers! Why bowl so short on a slow track?

  18. Floodlight fear avertedpublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

There was some suggestion the Bangladesh Cricket Board had been trying to save on the electricity bill by turning the lights off between innings. My uncle always used to say 'if there is no-one in a room there should not be a light on.' Not the greatest of catchphrases but you get the gist. Anyway it was a brief floodlight failure but it has all been fixed.

Looks like we've had some kind of floodlight failure in Chittagong. It's pitch black out there so they are kind of integral.
