What was I saying about Duckett's timing? The leftie makes light of his sketchy start by heaving Nasir for six over deep mid-wicket. Cue stone-cold silence in the crowd. He then uses his feet to loft two to long-off. Calculated stuff. I like it.

    Billings 42, Duckett 4

We're now firmly into ODI middle-over territory for Billings, no catchers in place and boundary riders straight and square of the wicket. Mosaddek at least has a slip stationed for Duckett, who is struggling to find his timing. Billings is equally adept on the sweep and advancing down the track to take singles to long-on and long-off.

I've been very impressed with Billings so far, not just the shots but not getting worked up after that provocative collision with Mortaza and sensibly not encouraging Vince to review that lbw decision.

Superb from Billings, who reverse-sweeps Nasir with power - and placement - to collect four. Duckett then needs a dive to beat the throw from short fine-leg as Billings goes in search of a quick single. Very, very close. A direct hit would have sent him on his way.

Having secured the cup and in the process broken their opening batters nose from a short delivery we then played the same team in the final league game the following week. Walking onto the field to bowl first I was approached by a rather large lady who wasn’t very impressed with her husband’s new black & blue features and in a rather threatening manner suggested I don’t dare injure him any further. I politely suggested he use his bat rather than his nose this game. I swear his knees were knocking as I ran in and I wasn’t even that quick!

And yet more spin. The arrival of Ben Duckett is the cue for Mosaddek Hossain to be introduced into the attack. Steady start from the offie, who concedes only three singles and ends the over with a half-hearted appeal for lbw against he left-handed Duckett. Mosaddek is the sixth bowler we've seen - the innings is only 13 overs old.

Our cricket league matches in Toronto are typically played on artificial grass (astro-turf) matting pitches which requires the use of chalk for crease and guard markings. During one match, an opposition player came out to bat, marked his guard and then proceeded to mark out good length and short ball indicators in the middle of the pitch. A heated protest from our team ensued, followed by farcical scenes when our fielders counter acted the pitch markings with lewd messages of our own directed towards the batsman. Eventually, all was erased and the batsman (now sledged as Picasso) was bowled second ball off a full toss.

The opening stand was worth 63 and England are pretty much up with the required rate, but Bangladesh have the opening they craved.

Vince lbw Hossain 32 (Eng 63-1)

Another over, another bowling change. And it works! Nasir Hossain gets Vince with his fourth delivery. The batsman is right back in his crease, and across his stumps, as he attempts to work to leg, Nasir finds turn, the ball brushes Vince's pad and the finger goes up. Vince discusses a review with Billings, but decides against it. Probably wise.

Playing in the Sussex League a team's opener gloved the ball to gully (yes gully!) and stood his ground. Words exchanged - when we played them at their place I nicked ball to keeper, stood my ground, only to be confronted by their Aussie pro who ran 20 words to deliver: 'The phrase cheating **** comes to mind'. I said 'ask the fella at midwicket (opener) why I'm not walking'. Got out a couple of balls later and was given a rather verbal send-off. Shared a drink with the Aussie after the game.

Taskin Ahmed, Bangladesh's highly rated quick, is on in place of skipper Mortaza. Vince greets him with a well-placed cut behind square for four, and betters that effortlessly timed stroke with a flowing drive through extra-cover. A well-run two to wide third man caps a good over for England. Vince has just taken his helmet off - it's fair to say he's got a sweat on.

I was umpiring in a Nidderdale League match when the stumps were broken by a brilliant long throw from the boundary. Loud appeals ensued, but the batsman had made his ground. In his disgust, one fieldsman began effing and blinding, and then threw his cap to the ground and started jumping up and down on it. I asked the bowler who his skipper was, as he ought to try to calm him down. His reply? "That's him!'.

High praise indeed from Simon Hughes. Maybe England fans can expect big things from a player who has been exceptional for Kent in recent years. He's only 25 - and keeps wicket too. Tidy against from Shakib - two off the over.

This is a huge undertaking for Sam Billings, opening in this match, but I've spent some practice time with him and, apart from Buttler, he's the most talented batsman I have ever seen.

It's been nine overs in coming but the Billings sweep is out of the box. He's down on one knee to divert Mortaza to a very fine fine-leg for four, then heaves one over the rope at deep backward square-leg for six. He follows it with a play-and-a-miss as he makes room to cut. It's entertaining, I'll give him that. Good over for England - 11 off it.

I kid you not with this story. Playing in a Division 6 game in the Leics league, for once we had a league umpire. The bowler served up a wide half-volley about two foot outside off stump. Our number eight leathers it with all his might only for long on to sprint round and take a superb catch. The umpire then turns to the scorers and signals a wide! He tells the batsman he is not out because "you can't be expected to properly hit a ball that wide". Cue 10 minutes of chaos as batsman walks off while umpire insists he should continue to bat!

The stubbled Shakib twirling, making good use of the crease and mixing up his pace ever so slightly. Billings and Vince collect a single apiece down the ground, but that's England lot. The screw is being tightened.

You sense that if England are to pull off the highest ODI chase at this ground, they need to make hay against the new ball before the spinners take over. To that end, the tourists will be pleased with the start they've made. Billings' fancy footwork has persuaded wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim to stand up to the stumps to Mortaza. Just three singles off that over
