It was worth the early rise if you are an England fan. They held their nerve, dug deep and got the victory.

Bangladesh may not have won this Test but, on the evidence of their performance here, a big result in five-day cricket is not far away.

I hazard a guess we won't get a more exciting Test match than this in the next six, but I hope we do.

More from Trevor Bayliss, speaking to Sky Sports: "He [Ben Stokes] is well on track to becoming a very good player. I don't want to give him to much credit or he might not fit through the door. He has worked hard on playing spin. He smothered it and played the bad ball. He was our best batter.

"The challenge for Gary [Ballance] is the same as for any batter in the top four. When it is kicking out the rough and staying lower it is difficult. Against Pakistan he was one of our best players of spin. It will be tough but he is working hard on meeting the challenge."

This was the 53rd Test played in Bangladesh - 52 played by the Tigers, plus a Pakistan-Sri Lanka Test in Dhaka in 1999 (the final of the Asian Test Championship).

England coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to Sky Sports: "A great Test match. I am sure it was a great watch on TV. The boys showed what they are made of. They are adaptable. We still have things to learn on these wickets but a win here will take us a long way.

"We have world class seamers who can reverse the ball. Stokes, at the end of the first innings, was swinging the old ball. The Bangladesh players are brought up on these wickets. They can play spin quite well."

More from England vice-captain Joe Root on Sky Sports: "No sign of nerves [from coach Trevor Bayliss]. Maybe some relief. He is very, very relaxed. It is a big asset to have around this game, especially with some younger players making their debuts. 

"This isn't a pitch I want to play on every week but I am so happy to have played a part in this Test match."

England vice-captain Joe Root on Sky Sports: "Sabbir could have put us under a lot of pressure if he had got hold of one of the spinners. It was a nervy start but we have lots of experience in our seam attack.

"Ben Stokes has been a fantastic cricketer. He is getting better and better and more confident. He is a natural leader on the field. Always 100%. People want to play with him. You know things are going to happen.

"There are times when it doesn't quite work for him but then there are games like this when it comes off. The best thing about him is that even when it doesn't work he is the first one putting his hand up and wanting the ball back."

Man of the match Ben Stokes: "We pretty much knew it would myself, Broady or Woakes to take the ball first up with the way it was reversing. But we always had the option of spin if it wasn't moving.

"I have started off pretty well but it is a long winter from here. Hopefully this is just the starting point and I can perform on a consistent basis.

"I had to tighten up my technique against spin, especially with lots of men around the bat.

"Plenty of sun cream is needed out here! It is all in the training. We bat for long periods of time so our bodies are used to the conditions."

Dr Tom Wilkinson: Playing a shot?! His bat was behind his leg, of course he wasn't!

Ian Bradley: If he was playing a shot at that ball, so was I, in Swindon.

England captain Alastair Cook: "It was a really good test match. I didn't think we would be here on day five. It was a tight game and it is a shame there is a loser.

"I am happy we showed the character to hold our nerve. The seamers saw us home.

"The ball was reversing and we have three very good reverse seam bowlers. I was not going to hedge my bets. They would have attacked the spinners. I went with seam, knowing I could change to spinners with the new ball coning. 

"I want to thank out loyal 12 or 15 fans who have come out to support us. Even that makes it special to play for England.

"Ben [Stokes] balances the side for us. We can play an extra spinner in these conditions. He may have a lot of skill and talent but he has a huge heart. You can't get the ball out of his hand.

"As part of the seven test match odyssey we are on here, the spinners will improve. They will be better for this experience."

Stokes got the ball reversing in about the 60th over in the first innings. But he kept running in hard with pace, and that has aided him in getting those wickets. This is going against his natural instincts as he wants to hit the pitch as a bowler and get after the ball as a batsman - he's matured as a cricketer.

It's easy to come here as a quick bowler, bowl a few overs and expect the spinners to get on with it. But quality seam bowling, with some reverse swing, has a role to play out here.

For me, Gary Ballance hasn't offered anything. He hasn't looked competent at all. Ansari is the only left-arm spinner in the squad and he offers something with the bat, so it would give them another option.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim: "Probably it was not in our favour, 33 runs and two wickets, but the boys put in so much effort over the last five day, after 15 months,I'm really proud. The boys showed their character and fought hard over five days. I am happy with that.

"If we could score 290 in the first innings we could have easily have chased down the total in the last innings. Stokes took that away from us.

"Sabbir has been outstanding in the last one-and-a-half years. He played really well. Mehedi bowled really well in his first game.

"I thought it was a good track. It was difficult but not unplayable. Hopefully we can come up with some good plans in Dhaka. We have good spinners who can take wickets."
