There's still Zafar Ansari in the squad - do they need to play three fast bowlers? Do they continue playing Rashid?

I think the new ball would have been quite easy for the batsmen to get away, a couple of blows and the game could have been over, so it was the right decision [not to take it]. He could have gone with Broad and Batty if he wanted a spinner at one end, but Stokes has been unbelievable with the old ball. I'd have been nervous bowling Rashid or Moeen Ali - the only options were Stokes, Batty and Broad.

Does that betray the fact that Cook might not be confident in Rashid and Moeen?

I think it does. What worries me is that they're skilful bowlers, but not quite as consistent - look at Mehedi, who Bangladesh gave the new ball to. He [Cook] didn't have confidence in them.

Steve Clark: Clearly not playing a shot. Bat came down as an afterthought when he realised he had made an error.

Wesley Spearman: Need further proof Test matches should stay five days long?

dukkhaboy: Did England win because when it gets tight they are better? And as Bangladesh don't play nearly as many Tests as England do?

I think the third umpire starts with a clean slate so he has to decide whether Shafiul was playing a shot - and I didn't think he was. Was that bat seriously threatening to hit the ball? No. But I suspect there'll be some chuntering from Bangladesh.

What did you think after the last wicket?

He's technically not offering a shot, but you know the number 11 probably processes it a bit slower. The ball was tailing back, my gut feeling it was out and it was the right decision as there wasn't a clear intention to play a shot. How many different reviews have we had?

It's one of the best games I've seen for a long time. Radio Bangladesh have gone already! It might have been different if they'd won.

Harry McCrea: Might have actually been good for Test cricket had Bangladesh won, but well fought England.

Matthew Mansfield: Nice and quick in the end. Great result and yet again another superb Test match. Why this form will always survive.

  9. England win by 22 runspublished at 05:25 British Summer Time 24 October 2016

The argument over whether Shafiul was playing a shot or not will rumble on. The fact is, though, that England have won a fantastic game of cricket by 22 runs.

Cruel on Bangladesh as they were so, so close to their most famous Test win, but the tourists have dug deep and pulled a win out of the bag.

He may have been trying to play a shot, but couldn't jam his bat down in time. He was half a second too late.

If he's been hit outside the line but is deemed to be playing a shot, who decides that? The third umpire.

Shafiul lbw Stokes 0 (Ban 263)

He's out! It's over! England have won! The ball is shown to be clipping off to give us umpire's call. There is some controversy, though. Was he playing a shot or not? If he was then the fact he was hot outside the line saves him. Clearly, the umpires believe no shot was being played.

Oh lets end this on a review shall we?! Stokes traps Shafiul on the pad playing a very nervous forward prod. The bat is nowhere in the equation.

I bet you England wouldn't have reviewed that if we hadn't gone past the 80-over mark as they wouldn't have two left. What confused us, and would have given Bangladesh some optimism, was the manner of the shot Taijul played as he went a long way over to the off side.

A critical moment of the match. Shafiul, let's not forget, has a Test half-century.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 81.1 overs

Taijul lbw Stokes 16 (Ban 263-9)

It's out! The review system was always going to play a big role in this finale. The 25th time we have gone upstairs results in another over-turn as the ball is shown to be hitting then middle of leg stump. Sabbir is on his knees, forehead resting on his bat. England are bouncing.

  17. Umpire reviewpublished at 81.1 overs

    Ban 263-8

Big appeal. England want lbw against Taijul. The ball has gone down to fine leg and they have run two. My instinct is that it is going down, but the reviews have been refreshed and England are desperate so why not have a look?

I know we've only had three overs, but it's not doing much for the seamers.

  19. Ban 263-8published at 81 overs

    23 runs required

Taijul's technique is not pretty but it is proving effective. He is doing a cracking job so far. He flicks the ball off his legs to pick up another single and keep the strike for what you assume will be Stokes again.

  20. Ban 262-8published at 80.3 overs

    24 runs required

England are still happy to let Sabbir have a single. He taps Broad into the off side and sprints through.
