England captain Alastair Cook on the batting: "I thought 400 was a pretty good score on that wicket. Keaton played really well and we had an opportunity to get 450, but historically, on this ground, 400 is a good score.

"In the second innings we had our chances. Again, in our conditions and this team at the moment, we're not taking those chances.

"Virat played an extraordinary innings but we had a chance to get him on 60. Those are the things that he game is changing on. We're in the game three days but we're not good enough to take those opportunities."

  3. 'The rolling stone is difficult to stop'published at 04:52 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

There was a slight hope Buttler and Bairstow might get a few runs. I’ve been on winning sides and losing sides. When you’re down and out, when the rolling stone is going downhill, it’s very difficult to stop it. You don’t deliberately try and fold, you don’t give up. It just goes badly.

50 for Jonny Bairstow and 77 for Joe Root will have given England a flicker of hope of making India bat again, but that flicker was extinguished within the first 10 minutes of this morning. Ashwin has been supreme. His ball to Bairstow this morning was magnificent.

  7. The stats behind England's defeatpublished at 04:46 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

The stats won't make pretty reading for England.

    • They lasted just 48 balls this morning
    • Ashwin's spell, from Ball's dismissal to Anderson, saw him take six wickets for five runs

  9. 'This team is the number one team'published at 04:42 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

India coach Anil Kumble on Ravichandran Ashwin: "He is constantly working. He's never happy or satisfied with what he's doing, that's the best thing about Ash.

"What he does is set the batsman up and that's the beauty of his bowling. He knew the carrom ball would come into play here.

"This team is certainly the number one team in the world today and it has the potential to become the best ever Test team in terms of results.

"They are exceptional in terms of the intensity they show on the pitch. Everyone has contributed and that is the beauty about this team. It's a privilege to be a part of the set-up."

  11. 'You have to make use of the surface'published at 04:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

How many times on that first day did I say England will have to make 550? I said that pitch was pretty good and even by the second evening it was turning a bit but not like today. You have to make use of the surface and they didn't.

WICKET - INDIA WIN BY INNINGS AND 36 RUNSpublished at 55.3 overs

    Anderson c Umesh b Ashwin (Eng 195)

A fitting end, as Ravichandran Ashwin takes the final wicket. Anderson flicks the ball into the air, it's an easy catch for Umesh Yadav. Ashwin and Kohli snatch up a stump each as Kohli salutes the crowd.

Jadeja, grinning like the cat that got the cream, bowls some slower deliveries that Anderson and Buttler work for singles. Buttler's reverse sweep pops up and just over the heads of the waiting slip cordon. Kohli has a little chirp at Buttler, but whatever it is has the batsman grinning, before the umpire hovers in.

  16. Eng 194-9published at 54 overs

James Anderson has arrived at the wicket and before he's even faced a ball, there's words between him and Ashwin. The umpires get involved, telling Ashwin to calm down before Kohli pops over to see what's going on. There's lots of gesturing at each other. It's all a bit undignified.

The positive thing for England fans back home is that they won't have to listen to Geoffrey, because he's due on in five minutes and it'll probably be over by then.

    Rashid c Rahul b Ashwin 2 (Eng 193-9)

Five for Ashwin! Feels like I've written that hundreds of times in this series. Rashid tries to work him off his pads, the ball goes way up into the air and safely down into KL Rahul's hands. Ashwin just grins and claps his hands.

Ashwin is having a tremendous time of it. He is a wonderful bowler - he's found his method, and has beautiful flight and variations. He's wonderful to watch.

The noise inside the stadium is incredible. What a Test they've seen. Rashid hammers Jadeja back down the ground, and the bowler gets the tiniest of fingertips onto the ball. That went quickly and he did well to get down to his left. He shrugs his shoulders as England pinch a single.
