I failed to recognise Ben Stokes last night sat in city square, Leeds, enjoying the sunshine until I was 50m past him when it clicked who he looked like! In my defence he has a decent baseball cap on to hide under and I was on the phone (can't multi-task!).

Ben Stokes is at the crease, fresh from his IPL stint. Phehlukwayo greets him with a short ball that Stokes, senisibly, chooses to duck.

That wasn't a very quick bouncer, almost too slow. Root had both feet in the air, it was a horrible shot. Phehlukwayo has burgled two wickets.

    Root c Amla b Phehlukwayo 37 (Eng 122-3)

Eurgh. Just eurgh. That is an ugly dismissal from Joe Root. The bouncer from Phehlukwayo, dug in with a little bit of menace but not much, and Root swiped high above his head and had no control over it. He was leaping off the floor to play the shot, and it was an easy snaffle for Hashim Amla.

England need to press on a little bit - they have lots of wickets in hand.

That lull I was on about? Yeah, Eoin Morgan's had enough of that. Down the pitch he comes to Phehlukwayo and swipes him over long on for another big six, the ball dropping just in front of the stand. Phehlukwayo responds with a slower ball that Morgan makes a real meal of padding away for a leg-bye.

I once asked Bob Willis if he'd ever played cricket.

We're in a bit of a lull, now that Hales has gone. Root shadow bats at the non-strikers before Morgan comes cantering down the pitch, trying to swipe Parnell through mid-wicket for a boundary. He's forced to settle for a solitary run, though, the ball clipping the end of the bat.

  9. Eng 111-2published at 20 overs

    Root 35, Morgan 6

That's brilliant, Mike. My dad once met Queen in a bar, a few days after Bohemian Rhapsody was released, and didn't recognise them, either. That's a nice bit of work on the boundary from Imran Tahir, swiping the ball away from the rope to stop Morgan getting his first boundary.

    Root 34, Morgan 3

Root and Morgan work a few singles back and forth as Parnell carries on. He's bowled well so far, particularly after Hales sent that delivery flying into the stands. I hate to use that cliche, but it's been a good line and length from him.

Watch as Alex Hales hits a towering six way, way back off Wayne Parnell, shortly before his dismissal...

I failed to recognise Graham Onions in a pub toilet in Munich when standing next to him at the urinals. I eventually told him that he looked like a cricketer called Graham Onions...then the voice of his mate appeared from the toilet cubicle informing me that it WAS Graham Onions!

Phehlukwayo - a shorter, stockier build than South Africa's opening bowlers - comes over the wicket to Morgan, who gets off the mark to a shortish delivery. The rest of the over is straight into the pads, and Morgan contents himself with blocking.

It was a loosener, quite wide of off stump. Hales scented runs, tried a cut shot and it took the edge. That's his first ball in an international in England - what a start to his tour. It was an ordinary delivery, except for the fact that Hales nicked it.

  16. wicket

    Hales c de Kock b Phehlukwayo 61 (Eng 101-2)

Here's right-armer Andile Phehlukwayo - and he's got a wicket with his first ball! And it's Hales!

That's a loosener from Phehlukwayo and Hales wafted at it without any real conviction. The edge landed smartly into de Kock's gloves and Hales has to go. He looks a tad rueful.

Parnell chunters to himself as he walks back to his mark. Hales and Root then exchange singles to bring up England's 100.

That went a long way, It was like a golfer on the tee, the bat following through all the way over the shoulder. The ball has come back with a couple of bits missing.

Hello! That is a huge, huge six from Alex Hales! Wayne Parnell has returned to the attack and Hales has shimmied down the pitch, opened his arms and launched him into the stands. That flew off the bat - and a chunk of the ball has gone missing after it landed on the concrete.
