    Cook 67, Stokes 7

An anxious moment for England as Stokes, sliding in at absolute full stretch for a third run. The bat is down when the stumps are broken so the only damage is to the all-rounder's whites, which are now decidedly dingy.

I've just been for a chat with my old wicketkeeper Jack Russell, who's been asked to paint The Oval's 100th Test. Lovely lad.

Aggers adds: "Have you got him in for the TMS 60th anniversary game in Leeds? We need a wicketkeeper, and I want some ringers in. Apparently one of the stars of Love Island - and I can't believe I'm reading this - called Marcel has been confirmed for the match."

    Cook 66, Stokes 4

England national selector James Whitaker looks on from the stands, I think he is safe with Cook and Stokes at the crease, those picks won't be questioned. Just the single for Stokes as Morris continues to test the technique of the two left-handers.

Pigeon update. Just one left, a brown one. Standing at point. Looks confused.

  5. Eng 135-4published at 15:55 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

    Cook 66, Stokes 3

No fireworks in the Stokes-Rabada re-match and the England all-rounder collects a single. I wonder what celebrations each one has planned?

Tom Arron: Let's not get too down on Malan. What a delivery to receive on debut. Take a bow Rabada.

MD: Lots of one-day cricket means that yorkers these days don't have to be perfect as batsmen lack skill.Still an underused delivery!

Kelly-Jon Renna: Having missed the start of the day I was surprised to find out that we won the toss. Green track, cloud, rain & we bat first?

  7. Eng 129-4published at 15:51 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

    Cook 62, Stokes 1

Morris muscles in from the Pavilion End, Cook happy to take on the short one. A sweetly struck pull bounces in front of square-leg and stings his hands, Heino Kuhn might might need to refresh parts after that one. (For the younger listeners, it was an old beer advert).

It seems strange that we can't find a place in the Test squad for Hales, Roy and Rashid. They in my opinion would be a better option than Jennings, Westley and Dawson.

    This might prompt some responses.

Respite for England as Cook goes on to the back foot and skilfully works Rabada away to the square cover boundary, the former captain's seventh four.

Watch this one again, a shame not to see Malan get some runs but this was like one of the classic sand shoe crushers from the great Joel "Big Bird" Garner.

Denz: How come Philander seems to get the ball to move come rain or shine when all others have struggled in this series?

Theo Bowyer: Good job we picked an extra batsman... this is not a win the toss and bat first pitch. Cook will need to carry his bat!

James Hobbs: What can you say about this? Just top notch bowling from the South Africans. Aside from Jennings, all unavoidable.

Another left-hander, England's fourth in the top six, Ben Stokes, patiently keeps out Philander, who is still swinging a ball which still has plenty of shine on it. The seamer has bowled nine overs and has 2-8.

You can't really prepare for that - you don't get deliveries like that in county cricket. A tremendous piece of skill. If I'm Ben Stokes, I'm getting ready for that sort of delivery because it's just so difficult to deal with at that pace.

That's about as good as it gets. A big, booming inswinging yorker, right up in the blockhole which thudded into his stumps. My early nomination for the Brian Johnston Champagne Moment.

    Malan b Rabada 1 (Eng 120-4)

Relief for Malan as he pushes into the off side and scuttles through for a single from his 15th delivery faced but he is then dramatically bowled by a devastating swinging yorker at 88mph, sensational from Rabada.

More runs were scored off that ball from Philander than his previous 46 balls combined.

  17. Eng 118-3published at 15:30 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

    Cook 53, Malan 0

I was just thinking about a nice tea and cake moment, but this session has been extended because of the stoppages and tea will not be until 16:10 BST. Beautiful seam bowling again from Philander in the sunshine, beating Cook outside the off stump, but England's record Test runscorer latches on to a short one and cracks confidently to reach his 55th Test fifty from 128 balls.

There haven't been any runs since the rain break - and indeed, only eight runs in the last 11 overs.

Rabada returns in the sunshine from the Vauxhall End. The paceman didn't quite get the radar right earlier with his 0-14 from seven overs but Malan doesn't get any freebies in this one and has to continue to remain patient, still on nought from 14 balls.

According to Andrew Samson, 24 minutes of play have been lost. There were no minutes lost to the first interruption as they went to lunch straight away. So this should mean the scheduled close of play is 18:24 BST and we can go on until 18:54 to bowl the overs. And if it rains again, we still have 36 minutes of leeway.
