It's easy saying they have enough and they should declare but it's not your reputation on the line. I'd like just a few more.

A lot of people make a point of Root's inability to always convert once he's in but he guarantees to move the scoreboard along. Shouldn't be underestimated, that.

More spurious field changes - fielders swapping places while the field stays the same - ensures this will be the last over of the session.

Root plays out a maiden over - and strides off to the dressing-room, where no doubt he and coach Trevor Bayliss will reassess their declaration plans. The lead is 331 - England have added 79 this morning, rather less than the 100-120 Alec Stewart said last night that he hoped they'd get by lunch if they batted "proactively".

South Africa are not going to rush through the overs, they will just bowl what they have to - or slightly less than they have to.

    Westley 50, Root 38

Morkel's over seems to drag on even longer than normal, suggesting we'll only have time for one more before lunch.

It's a pretty dull and uneventful maiden over - so take a look at how Westley brought up his fifty:

The last batsman to make his debut batting at number three for England was Owais Shah, who made 88.

Well played, he deserves it. It's a psychological step in your career, you've got to get to fifty. Hundreds can come later, but I don't want him to give it away chasing runs.

Tom Westley reaches his debut Test fifty with a characteristic whip through mid-wicket for four. And a very understated celebration from the Essex man, for whom the milestone came from 119 balls.

When Westley goes to play through the off side he is sort of hanging back, that's the only thing I'd say about his batting. It's an area he should look at. He is a lot like John Crawley, who played some nice innings.

    Pigeons

Pigeon-watch. More adventurous, covering more ground today. Once they were huddled by the boundary, or tightly pecking at square leg. Now they are taking up a big space behind square, covering a lot of ground.

David Butcher: If England score any slower the pigeons in the outfield will start nesting. Rightly criticised at Trent Bridge but time to play shots now.

    Westley 46, Root 36

Maharaj, collar up in the style of Eric Cantona, spins down his second over to Root. In fact, "collar up" seems to be de rigeur at The Oval today - Root and fellow skipper Faf du Plessis both take that option. Two more singles added, the lead is 325.

I'd like to see Westley have more left shoulder, he still has too much bottom hand. He is very comfortable leg side but his off side shots could be improved. He wants to accept at Test level there will be a number of times when you are not able to score as quickly so you have to work a little longer for your runs. Don't give it away because of that.

Westley is watchful against Rabada, while Chris Morris has made a young fan's day by leaning over the boundary to add his autograph to the young lad's bat. A powerful cover drive from Westley's bat earns the Essex man a two.

Now it's time for Maharaj, who's instead going to bowl from the Vauxhall End, with a slip in place, plus two catchers in the area I like to call Reasonably Short Extra Cover (ie shorter than "short", but not short enough to be called "silly"). Westley comes down the pitch aiming a leg-side heave, but drills it straight to mid-wicket. Eventually he guides a single to deep mid-on- there's 20 minutes until lunch, and the rain seems to have passed by.
