Watching Jennings bat reminds me of watching Tim Henman play tennis. My fingers were always crossed and my heart was in my mouth. That doesn't happen when watching top class players like Federer, Nadal, Cook, Root.

England keep plodding along. Just a Root single added to the score.

Here's a four through the slips from captain Root.

    Westley 36, Root 13

England clearly have no plans to promote Jonny Bairstow for a quick thrash - he's not in his whites and is sitting in the dressing-room, earpiece in his ear, guzzling a purple-coloured drink and working on his Sudoku book. Root adds a single, Rabada finds a bit of bounce against Westley, but an attempted cover drive flies in the opposite direction from where he was aiming it, and goes through mid-wicket for four!

England have added 40 runs in 53 minutes today.

Richard Wilson: Having watched both lots at Durham, Keaton Jennings is a better Test bet than Mark Stoneman who is better suited to the shorter formats.

Vernon Philander reminds me of Terry Alderman and, of a more recent vinage, Mohammad Asif. With Asif, I could never understand how he'd make batsmen look like they'd been beaten for pace when he was bowling at 78mph.

South Africa make their first bowling change of the day as Vernon Philander replaces Morkel at the Pavilion End, but Root finds the unguarded third man boundary once more, opening the face with a delicate dab between the slips and gully. A single takes him to 12.

Not sure about the comment on 70s cricket [11:32], John Snow, Dennis Amiss, Tony Greig, Alan Knott, Derek Underwood to name but a few were well worth a watch, but then watching paint dry can be interesting in the right company!

    Westley 32, Root 7

Rabada, with a miserly 1-15 from his first nine overs, is whipped through mid-wicket by Root - Philander's after it, and after the illness he's had during this Test, you can understand his reluctance to pull out the full-length dive. It's four for the skipper as his side move past 100.

We've had three busy days at The Oval, but the crowd is down today, if only by a little. Lots of empty seats in the Peter May Stand.

Root has a trademark cheeky grin on his face as he's beaten all ends up by Morkel, but another single backward of point doubles his score.

Doug Woodcock: I think Jennings can still come good. That early partnership he put on with Cook in the second innings of the first Test was crucial.

The clouds have rolled in and the last 20 minutes have made it harder to bat than the previous 20 minutes.

Root, yet to score, is tested by Rabada who whistles one past his back-foot defensive prod. The England skipper doesn't look in too much of a hurry to move up through the gears - from which we can infer that any declaration is quite a way off. But Root's finally off the mark from his 13th delivery with a gentle single to deep point.

Ian Sullivan: Graeme Smith is being very polite about it but clearly thinks Jennings is rubbish.

Howard Horner: Not convinced by Jennings, but he should play at Old Trafford. Fought hard and rode luck for 48, see if he can build on that.

Selection has to come down to a feeling. Runs and technique should be considered and then there's a gut feeling. Look at Tom Westley... he just looks good and in control.

Morkel is still bowling a probing line and length, also testing Westley with three successive bouncers. The Essex right-hander, who looks as though his helmet is held together by white sticky tape, remains unbowed. A potential maiden over is ruined by a wide after five dot balls.

Old cricketers never die, they just become delusional about their own era. Alec Stewart bemoaning the loss of the ability to draw games. I seem to remember Raymond Illingworth et al criticising teams in the 80s & 90s for the same reason. I don't recall too many hard fought draws in Stewart’s era, he was involved in some pretty ordinary England performances. Watching the current England team is a lot more enjoyable than his & cricket in the 70s was like watching paint dry in comparison. The current commentators ought to appreciate how much today's players have improved the game.

Westley guides Rabada through the covers, another South African soils his flannels on the slippery outfield as the ball is retrieved and England run another three.
