Here's the moment Dawid Malan reached his maiden Test half-century for England, as he and Cook continued to pile on the runs.
Kemar Roach is back on, and Cook pushes the ball hard towards mid-on, who dives and takes the sting out of the ball. Just a single, which brings Malan on strike, and he's beaten by a fine delivery from Roach that holds its line and just nips away from the left-hander at the last second.

I reckon it's as chilly now as it was late last night. Every so often, a gust of wind whips through Edgbaston, making it feel genuinely cold. Spectators are pulling on jumpers and coats. There's even a drop or two of rain falling.
Chase 14-0-59-0
Excellent work from one of my colleagues, there, Tom. Time for some spin, as Jason Holder chucks the ball to Roston Chase. He fires through a tidy over, Cook and Malan prodding at the pitch, before they lean forward and tap the ball away for the odd single. Malan then comes dancing down the pitch and smashes the ball towards cover, bu the fielder there pulls off a hand-stinging stop to cut off a run.

There's some more spots of rain appearing on the camera lenses but we'll carry on for now. Cook clips Joseph leisurely through mid-off, where Jason Holder makes a dive and ends up belly-flopping onto the turf. Looks ungainly, but it's saved a boundary.

Well played Dawid Malan. My advice is to keeping doing the same thing - don't get too excited or let your emotions get too high.
Eng 417-3
It's got very windy, very dark and people are shuffling about for their coats in the stands. That generally means one thing... rain is on the way. Dawid Malan, searching for his half-century, gets a thick inside edge onto his pads. He thinks about setting off but Cook says no, and Malan waits, before pulling a short delivery away for two to bring up his half-century. He raises his bat in acknowledgment to the crowd, before celebrating by clumping the next delivery away for four!
The lights have just come on at Edgbaston, where it's looking a tad murky overhead. Malan, meanwhile, is closing in on his maiden Test half-century - here's one of the shots that have helped him on his way.
Cook 189, Malan 48
England are 400-odd and they've still got Stokes, Bairstow and Moeen to come. It's not a bad position to be in, is it? They might be waiting for a while though, as Malan unfurls another one of those fine cover drives, and gets a boundary for his troubles. He does play that shot very nicely. Ooh, that's not so good though! Malan shapes to cut, crouching down low, and the ball bounces tantalisingly over the top of the bat as Malan swipes at the Birmingham air.

If Malan manages to get a 100 here it pretty much guarantees him a seat on the plane to Australia. It's a big game for him.

Cook 188, Malan 44
Another no ball for West Indies. This time it's Miguel Cummins that oversteps as he aims one into Cook's legs. He responds with a half volley that Cook drives, and drives nicely, back down the ground for four. That's a lovely shot, and it's the first time that this pink ball has made a nice sound off the bat. It's all been a bit clunky so far. Cook nabs a single, helped by a leg side delivery, and Malan prods away the final ball of the over.

You can see that there is something in Alzarri Joseph. He can get quicker, he has quite a nice run-up and he can shape the ball.
Joseph 20-3-101-0
Alzarri Joseph will continue after drinks, a solitary slip in place, and he bowls a lovely, pacey delivery that is called a no ball by the umpire. He responds by overpitching, and Malan whirls his bat to crack the ball across the field and into the boundary rope. Joseph strides back to his mark and pushes the ball across Malan, but it's well wide outside off stump, and the batsman can leave ti with ease.

For the first half hour, West Indies were a little bit better. They bowled consistently and put it in the right areas. England know they may have to be watchful for two or three over bursts from the likes of Roach, but then they will have balls to score from.
If you're just joining us, here's a bit of what you've missed this afternoon, after a very tight opening 30 minutes from West Indies.

The West Indies bowlers are not good enough. It doesn't matter if they can swing the ball if they can't get their line right.
If I give them an orange, which won't see any movement, can they bowl six balls, 12 inches outside off-stump and on a decent length?
Cook 182, Malan 39
Four for Cook, as he gets the meat of the bat down onto a full delivery from Miguel Cummins and tonks it through mid-on. An inside edge from the same batsman brings up the 100 partnership between Cook and Malan, and they acknowledge it with a polite little fist bump in the middle of the wicket. Down the leg side again goes Cummins, and Malan helps it on its way to add another single to the total. Cummins, looking frustrated, goes short, and Cook tries to cut it but ends up sending the ball up towards the fielder at mid-wicket. It bounces just in front of him and Cook nabs two runs, before drinks arrive on the field.

Dawid Malan's not going to get a better chance for a ton. This pitch is flat and the West Indies can't string a series of threatening deliveries together. It's just frustrating, and to be honest, a bit sad, to see. This is a better over from Joseph, though, two leg byes proving to be the only runs from the over as he gets Malan to topple over once or twice.
