Hmm, Ryan ten Doeschate might not want to do that again.

He pads up to spinner Stephen Parry, huge shout for lbw from the Lancashire man, but it's turned down.

Five minutes to go until tea.

Essex captain Ryan ten Doeschate has some first-class batting record.

The 36-year-old averages 49.19, which is up there with the best of them.

He plays another super drive off James Anderson - his third boundary.

Essex have just steadied things after that three-wicket burst post lunch.

Chelmsford stood to applaud Dan Lawerence and the Lancashire players joined in - recognition and respect for a brilliant century.

He looked utterly untroubled, even James Anderson with a new ball couldn't dislodge his determination and concentration.

A thoroughly deserved century which is worthy of saving the match, but can his team-mates help him complete the job?

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant from Essex teenager  Dan Lawrence .

With all the pressure of Chelmsford, Maldon, Boreham and Braintree on his shoulders, the 19-year-old clips James Anderson for a couple to reach his fifth first-class hundred.

It came off 216 balls with 13 fours. Still so much hard work to do though.

Dan Lawrence is moving rapidly towards his century.

He slices Ryan McLaren down to the third-man rope, rather streakily, before pulling away his next ball with authority.

    Back-to-back boundaries and he's up to 94.

Dan Lawrence is showing such maturity in the middle.

The teenager squirts Kyle Jarvis down to third man for four - his 11th boundary.

Then, as all good batsmen do, clips him through the leg side for a single.

    He's messing with you Kyle!

Amidst the carnage of the last half-hour, Dan Lawrence is still battling away for Essex.

The 19-year-old has now faced 195 balls for his 80.

It will surely be the innings of his short career so far if he sees Essex to safety here.

Essex are in all sorts of bother now.

Adam Wheater tries to swat Kyle Jarvis through the covers but hits it straight to Haseeb Hameed at cover who takes a fine low catch.

The hosts have lost three wickets for 11 runs after lunch.

Essex still have plenty of batting left, but Lancashire are all over them at the moment.

Kyle Jarvis bends one past new batsman Adam Wheater's outside edge and it misses by a whisker.

There's plenty of chat in the middle.

The new ball has done the job for Lancashire and Ravi Bopara !

Kyle Jarvis finds the all-rounder's outside edge and Alex Davies snaffles it behind the stumps.

Up goes the umpire's finger, Ravi is on his way.

Lancashire have come out fighting after lunch.

    Ooh, that's got to hurt.

A fired-up James Anderson digs one in to Dan Lawrence and the teenager wears one on the chest.

But he sees out the rest of the over unscathed. Daggers from Jimmy.

This is why I've always found cricket a frustrating sport to play.

Apart from the fact I'm not overly brilliant with the bat - one good ball and that's you done for the day.

As Tom Westley just found out...
