What an exceptional knock from Alex Hales and most importantly he's still there, that's exactly what Nottinghamshire need.

This is by far his best innings.

  2. 150 runs

for Alex Halespublished at 33.1 overs

    Notts 211-5 - target 298

That's really well played, Alex Hales. His 150, courtesy of a clip into the offside for four - and partly thanks to a misfield - comes up off 120 balls, including 17 fours and four sixes.

He also now has the highest-ever individual score in a county final at Lord's.

That'll go very nicely with his record England ODI score of 171, which he struck against Pakistan at Trent Bridge last summer.

  3. Notts 207-5 - target 298published at 33 overs

    Hales 146, Read 22

Ravi Rampaul has looked very tidy indeed today, with only two no balls for a short-pitched delivery spoiling that particular over.

Alex Hales runs a leg bye off the final ball, meaning he'll keep strike and we're back on for this record. He's one away from bettering it...

  5. Notts 202-5 - target 298published at 32 overs

    Hales 145, Read 21

A single off the final delivery means Alex Hales moves to 145 not out. He's one short of Geoffrey Boycott's record.

Come on Alex, it's there for the taking now...

  6. Notts 201-5 - target 298published at 31.5 overs

Scott Borthwick is getting some tap here. This time it's floated up, but the result is exactly the same. Six to Alex Hales.

  7. 6 runs

    Notts 193-5 - target 298published at 31.1 overs

    Hales 137, Read 20

And that's some introduction back into the action too - Scott Borthwick drags one down, Alex Hales rocks back and absolutely launches it for six. Big.

  8. Notts 187-5 - target 298published at 31 overs

Ravi Rampaul, with two wickets to his name, returns to the attack and limits the damage to just four singles. This partnership is now up to 37 and, if they carry on for another 10 overs or so, it'll surely prove a key one.

Scott Borthwick's coming back now too...

Sean Annely: Whan an innings from Alex Hales - just needs a partner now!

Adam Wheeler: Is Boycott's record under threat from Hales? Think it is.

Peter Collins: Winner is down to two factors. Does Hales bat all the way through? And do Notts run out of wickets before Hales wins it for them?

Where Mark Stoneman failed (just!), could Alex Hales succeed? The record Adam is talking about is the best-ever score in a county final at Lord's, which currently stands at 146 not out by Geoffrey Boycott.

  10. Notts 183-5 - target 298published at 30 overs

    Hales 129, Read 18

Chris Read is batting very nicely here, already becoming Nottinghamshire's biggest contributor behind Alex Hales. He scythes Tom Curran away for his third boundary of the innings, soon moving to 18 not out.

Is the pendulum just swinging back Notts' way? It looks like we're on for a cracking finish, either way.

That's not a sight any Notts fan wants to see - Alex Hales collapsing in a heap after being struck high on his left leg above the pads.

He'll be alright, though. On we go.

  12. WATCH: Alex Hales reaches his centurypublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 1 July 2017

Alex Hales has looked in splendid touch this afternoon.

You can watch him reach his century here...

  13. Notts 173-5 - target 298published at 29 overs

If we spent plenty of the Surrey innings discussing the merits of Mark Stoneman being called up to the England Test side, should we be doing the same for Alex Hales?

He's already had his chance, of course, and looked constantly susceptible outside off-stump - an area in white-ball cricket he's outrageously strong.

Nonetheless, food for thought. Six singles from six Gareth Batty deliveries.

  14. Knife-edge stuff at Lord'spublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 1 July 2017

    Adam Williams

What a peculiar game this is turning into.

There's a game within a game with Alex Hales continuing to plunder runs at one end, but Surrey keeping up the pressure with wickets at the other.

Hales is dominating this Notts run-chase so far, but at some stage he will need somewhere to stay there with him.

What chance Chris Read as captain in his last year in county cricket being the man to do it? That would make a decent yarn.

  15. Notts 167-5 - target 298published at 28 overs

As that scorecard shows, given we're now 28 overs in and only one batsman has passed double figures other than Alex Hales, it's probably about time someone helped him out with some of the scoring.

Chris Read might be that man here, clobbering a cover drive for four, after Hales himself had struck yet another boundary earlier in the over.

Ten from it, which is handy at this stage.

  16. Notts 157-5 - target 298published at 27 overs

How silly is this scorecard, by the way? Pretty silly, I think.

    • Lumb - 4
    • Hales - 116
    • Wessels - 6
    • Patel - 7
    • Taylor - 11
    • Mullaney - 5
    • Read - 5

A pretty un-noteworthy over from Gareth Batty yields only three runs. Surrey turning the screw. Hales, almost on his own, resisting so far.

  17. Notts 154-5 - target 298published at 26 overs

Chris Read hits his next delivery for four, which is a bit more like it. Who wins from here then, folks?

  18. Notts 150-5 - target 298published at 25.3 overs

Goodness me, Chris Read gets an absolute snorter second ball and very almost edges behind. Nervy stuff from Notts.

By the way, we're just seeing a replay of the Steven Mullaney dismissal and it looks as though he very much got some bat on the ball before it clattered his pads. Tough luck.

    Notts 150-5 - target 298

Wow, welcome back! My arrival in the first innings seemed to bring a clatter of Surrey wickets and, unfortunately for Notts, I've started with a bang second time out too.

Steven Mullaney, who'd very much played a supporting role to Alex Hales, is pinned in front of the sticks and his side are five down.

Chris Read, retiring at the end of the season, is the next man in. Now, is it written in the stars?...

When you got a left arm bowler bowling round the wicket and it's hit him on the left pad you have to suspect it was going down leg. Steve Mullaney has got to feel hard done by there.

  20. Notts 150-4 - target 298published at 25 overs

Alex Hales cannot make anything from the final two deliveries and Notts need another 148 from the 25 overs remaining. And with that, it's back to Brendon Mitchell to take us home to the conclusion.
