The crowd, possibly better lubricated, are much more vocal since the resumption. The background din is up a notch or two, there are more heckles from Aussie voices and the Barmies are singing "four more to the Eng-ger-land". Does anyone know anything about this Vince fella? England should have picked him before...

    Vince 43, Stoneman 30

Vince and Stoneman nab a quick single from the first delivery of Pat Cummins over, thanks to some excellent calling and awareness of where the fielders are. Little things like that just stop the bowlers from completely stifling England. Cummins goes short and Vince cracks a pull off the back foot, but it goes on the bounce to the waiting fielder. Umpire Erasmus then has a little word with Cummins about running on the pitch. Nothing official, mind, just a gentle reminder. Vince rounds off the over with another cracking shot off the back foot for a couple. This is now Vince's highest Test score.

There were some guts in that shot from James Vince. He came dashing down and drove it through cover. An excellent shot.

  4. Eng 71-1published at 34 overs

Nathan Lyon is doing what he does best, battering through a speedy, tidy over, bringing the batsman forward, before James Vince clobbers him for four. That's a lovely shot - a little shimmy out of the crease from Vince, a controlled swing of the arms, and the ball gets driven through the covers and down to the boundary. Lyon then paws pensively at the pitch at the end of the over.

Ahnaf Tahmed Faiz: James Vince has that 'stand & deliver' stance on him, just needs to check his temperament & not go after every loose delivery outside the off stump.

  6. Eng 67-1published at 33 overs

Two slips in place for Pat Cummins, as Stoneman lets a delivery bounce over his stumps. Ooh, that's edgier from Stoneman, playing away from his body and a thick outside edge goes up through the covers. The camera pans up to an unimpressed looking Cook in the dressing room, who is mid-conversation with Stuart Broad. There's lots of arm wafting going on. Meanwhile, Cummins completes a very tidy maiden.

The Aussie women's team, who retained their version of the Ashes, have been presented with their medals in front of the crowd. Ellyse Perry got the biggest cheer of the day. Home crowd being revved up?

    Lyon 8-3-9-0

Tim Paine seems like a very nice man but wow, that incessant chirruping would get on your wick. Every delivery Nathan Lyon twirls down is greeted with a "beautiful, Gaz, beautiful!" from the keeper. Vince uses his feet and flicks a delivery tantalisingly close to short leg, but the ball hits the ground before Shaun Marsh can get to it. It's really good stuff from Lyon, giving nothing away, and that's a maiden.

Shot of the day so far by Mark Stoneman, punching down the ground.

A very pleasing shot for a batsman - it shows you're in good touch and balanced at the crease.

  10. Eng 67-1published at 31 overs

Lovely sunshine in Brisbane now as Pat Cummins stomps towards the crease. His first delivery is full and swinging in, but James Vince gets his foot forward and cover drives for three. Cummins responds with a corker that beats Stoneman's prod forward, and the batsman immediately wanders off to short leg to have a word with himself. That's four, though, as Stoneman pushes a straight delivery back down the ground and the ball goes clattering into the ropes.

Mark Stoneman and James Vince looked the part out there - Stoneman hasn't stopped smiling all morning. He's playing like he's got a cigar in his mouth.

  12. Eng 60-1published at 30 overs

    Vince 33, Stoneman 25

Nathan Lyon will get us underway after that impolite bout of rain. James Vince pats his first ball through a sprawling short leg that momentarily has the crowd interested. There's definite turn there for Lyon, and Vince uses the full face of the bat to smother it. A wider delivery is driven carefully away for a single.

Maybe this pitch will quicken up and it will become a bit more lively. But you look at that session - it was skillful cricket. Australia have probably got to plan D already. I thought they turned to the off-spinner a little too late.

And here come James Vince and Mark Stoneman. We're gonna have some cricket!

Mark Whitrod: Been looking forward to the Ashes for ages. Cold and snowy here north of Toronto and wanted to watch cricket to remind me of summer.

I didn't realise how close the two dressing rooms are at the Gabba. The two teams are basically sat side by side. Paul Collingwood is staring out on the pitch and resolutely ignoring Darren Lehamnn, who is stood a few steps behind him and chewing furiously on some gum.

England have got to ensure they don't settle for 380/390 - they should be thinking about 450.

  19. Who is the real Trevor Bayliss?published at 04:04 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2017

Not long after England last won the Ashes in Australia, Trevor Bayliss was working as an estate agent.

Now, he's the Australian coach looking to guide England to Ashes victory.

Here's Stephan's piece on Bayliss' journey from selling houses in Australia to plotting his own country's Ashes downfall.

This pitch, from what we have seen, should be one which you can bat for 120/130 overs on. England should be aiming to keep the Australian quick bowlers out there as long as possible.
