  1. dropped catch

Vince dropped on 68published at 51.3 overs

Lyon causing all sorts of problems for Vince in this over, ramping up the pressure until a delicious third ball that just straightens enough to tickle the outside edge.

But the keeper Tim Paine shells it. Always slightly tough standing up but that should've been taken.

  3. Eng 121-1published at 51 overs

Stoneman taps away for another single before Vince does the same off the last ball.

Tremendous grit from Stoneman so far today. He's not been able to play his usual, more attacking game but has showed great concentration and rarely looked flustered.

Careers being made not ended in Brisbane?

Mark Stoneman's 50 came from 150 balls, with three fours, in 210 minutes. It's his second half-century in Test cricket.

    Eng 119-1

Something does happen - but it's a single for Vince as he cuts away a Cummins short ball.

More action as Stoneman edges perilously close to second slip, but it gets through and the opener scrambles two to bring up his second Test fifty.

That's taken him 150 balls. Grind.

Darren Lehman brought this tactic to Yorkshire: bowl three maidens, and something will happen.

    Lyon 13-4-20-0

Lyon sends down a beauty that turns and whisks past the outside edge of Stoneman's bat.

Steve Smith is very excited a first slip. A little bit of pressure being applied by Australia now as they seek a crucial breakthrough before tea.

No more dramas off the rest of the over but yet another maiden.

I reckon that's the first loose shot Vince has played. Stoneman came down and had a little chat with him.

    Cummins 11-4-32-0

Yeesh, the first wafty play and miss from Vince today as he plants the front foot and thrashes at a wide on from Cummins.

Stoneman comes down to have a word - no need to throw it away now.

Better off the rest of the over, leaving well outside his off peg.

England bowler Tom Curran is currently attempting to carve open a mango with a butter knife.

Poor lad looks like he's never handled one before. All smiles in the England dressing room so far.

Darren Lehmann will be fuming that the pitch has played as it has - it's been so slow.

    Stoneman 48, Vince 66

Nathan Lyon rattles through another over. You'd not have bet that he'd be Australia's best bowler on day one at the Gabba.

Just a couple of singles there, England ticking along.

Thanks Amy - another stellar shift there.

Welcome to those of you just waking up, no doubt grinning (if you're an England fan) at the state of the game.

Big hand to those of you who are still up.

I've retrieved my can of energy drink from the fridge and have bananas at the ready - here we go...

And that is my cue to leave. Here's Jack Skelton.

  15. Eng 114-1published at 47 overs

Pat Cummins is going to begin his tenth over, and he gets it going with some delightful rubbish that goes flying down the leg side. Tim Paine again does well to collect it, while Cummins shoots him a rueful grin. Stoneman chips a delivery off his hips and goes tearing down the wicket for a single. Cummins then, finally, strikes Vince on the pads and pleads with the umpire. It sounded like there was a bit of bat on it to me, and umpire Erasmus shakes his head.

Tom Leahy: My five year old just woke me up again. I'm really pleased with him! Well done Vince and come on England.

Ryan King: A century partnership for the second wicket instead of England being 30/3. I hope our players are not feeling too dizzy.

    Lyon 11-3-18-0

Early days, of course, but Australia's fast bowlers are clocking up some overs. Mitch Starc's already bowled 14. Here's Nathan Lyon, as Josh Hazlewood takes a breather, and his first delivery bounces, taking Vince by surprise. Tim Paine, up to the stumps, collects it neatly. Oh! Lyon brings Vince forward and the ball spoons up off the edge of the bat, but it falls just beyond a grasping Shaun Marsh at short leg. Heart in mouth moment for Vince there, and he settles himself back down with another lovely boundary through the covers.

  19. Eng 107-1published at 45 overs

    Vince 60, Stoneman 45

Starc directs a series of deliveries into Stoneman's midriff, and the England opener stands tall before patting the ball away for a single. Starc wanders over to look at his mark - coincidentally, right where Stoneman is stood, and Stoneman immediately turns his back on him and wanders up the pitch to have a chat with Vince. That's several times England have done that today, just turning their back on their opponents.

Ed Morgan: Every time Stoneman lets his guard down a little between balls he has the little grin of a man who can't quite believe he's not dreaming, good to see in a new Test player!
