Steve Smith averages 60.22. That's ridiculous. And ominous for England. Chris Woakes is out of the attack. Here's Jake Ball, who dismissed David Warner earlier on today.

England are still going with the same two bowlers since before drinks. That doesn't make sense.
Moeen has bowled too many overs on the trot. He was bowling well earlier but he hasn't beaten the bat in ages.
Smith 50, Marsh 25
Shaun Marsh gets in on the act now as he moves his feet and bunts a Moeen delivery to the ropes. I wonder if Moeen's starting to tire. He's not quite as accurate as he was earlier on, and actually, he's bowled a fairly lengthy spell - this is his 17th over.

It's not been scintillating but it's been exactly what his team needed - a proper captain's knock from Steve Smith.
Aus 128-4
A huge cheer goes around the Gabba as a leisurely single brings up Steve Smith's half-century.
That's tremendous work from the Australia captain. He's been patient, he hung in there when the wickets were falling and he's starting to accelerate now.

Sam Rosser: Up at 5am fielding endless questions from a 5 year old about what's going on. It's as proud a Dad moment as I've had!
The Happy Flyer: As an Englishman in a Sydney office I couldn't be prouder of our bowling performance at the Gabba.

Steve Smith pulls another delivery from Woakes but he's more in control of this one, dragging the ball down before loping through for an easy single. This feels more like yesterday did. That's rubbish from Woakes. Short, wide, and pulled powerfully by Marsh for four. Another tuck of the hips brings up the 50 partnership between this pair, from 125 balls. Woakes tucks Smith up but he still manages to flick the ball away for a single. And in more Glenn Maxwell news, he's brought up his double ton.

You have to take your hat off to Steve Smith, the lad knows his own game. But you don't give batsmen width on this sort of pitch.
He reminds me of Rahul Dravid. Once he got in, it felt like he'd never get out.
Smith 47, Marsh 16
We're going to get some more from Moeen. Smith makes a real mess of an attempted drive, the ball turning sharply into the batsman and getting big on Smith. A healthy outside edge then brings the Australia captain another couple of runs. And that is a fine shot from Smith! It's too full from Moeen, a real loose delivery, and Smith just bunts it through the covers for four. Lovely stuff.

It's just kicked off right in front of the written press box. Fists, stewards and police in there, proper ugly. Some spectators carted out. "There's always problems there," says one steward. "They are drinking in the sun all day."

Drinks done, it'll be Chris Woakes to continue. Joe Root appears to have added another layer of zinc cream to his nose. Very Adam Ant. Shaun Marsh gets tucked up by a few Woakes deliveries, before he raises his arm high above his head and lets a few balls go bouncing over his stumps. There's some decent carry from Woakes, actually, the ball rising as Bairstow collects it at waist height. A maiden.

You've got to bowl straight so the batsmen can't free their hands. If you stop them doing that then it's hard.
I just can't see how Woakes is trying to get a wicket. I can see what all the others are trying to do.
For those of you on Glenn Maxwell watch: he's still at the crease for Victoria on 189, with his side 321-3.
Marsh 16, Smith 40
Smith and Marsh are doing what Vince and Stoneman did yesterday. They've played carefully, steadied things, and now they're just starting to work the gaps. Smith, bat wobbling around all over the place, blocks successive Moeen deliveries back to the bowler. And with that maiden, it's time for drinks.

Morg: Local copper the spit of Mitchell Johnson takes his turn on boundary patrol and is treated to the Barmy Army song. Laughs and jokes by warming up his arm.

Steve Smith helps a leggy Chris Woakes delivery away for a single, while Shaun Marsh busies himself with blocking out the rest of the over. The Gabba crowd are getting a touch restless. The noise has just gone up a bit as Steve Smith checks what time it is with umpire Erasmus. That's a fine strike from Marsh, getting on top of the ball and driving some Woakes width to the boundary. This hasn't been Woakes' finest hour.

Moeen is not spinning it any more and there's got to come a point where the captain tells him to either start turning it again or come off and have a rest.
Marsh 12, Smith 39
A whirl of the wrists from Steve Smith as he faces up to Moeen, but the ball doesn't beat the fielder at mid-wicket. Moeen rather politely appeals for lbw as Marsh uses his feet and gets struck on the pad, but there's a healthy inside edge on that, and Moeen knew it. This is better from Australia though, starting to work the gaps and adding to the total.

This is the back of section 31, where the Barmy Army are housed. In days gone by, England fans would gather here for a singalong. In response, the Gabba built a wall so they can't see the cricket. It's where Donald Trump got the idea from.

Close! New bowler Chris Woakes bends his back on a short ball, and Smith goes on the pull. It's a poor shot, he's not in control of it and a big top edge goes ballooning down into the deep. Mark Stoneman is at deep square leg and he comes haring round, as does James Vince, but the ball lands between the two of them, and it ends up going for four.
And that's another boundary. Too straight from Woakes and Smith cashes in, flicking the ball off his pads for four. Marsh then goes for a booming drive, and ends up inside edging the ball towards gully.
