I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday. I thought Vince was superb - admittedly, I missed the run out because, er, napping is important. Lyon was tremendous with the ball, although his role as sledger in chief has got tiresome pretty quickly. Cummins was the most impressive of the pace bowlers and, for all the talk about his body not holding up, he had a lovely rhythm throughout the day.

Before this series started, James Vince became the latest in a long line of people to be sledged by legendary Australia opener Matthew Hayden.

Hayden - who, as an aside, does an excellent range in cookbooks these days - said England were a rabble, and announced "I honestly don't know who half these guys are".

Asked about the comments yesterday after making his maiden Test half-century, Vince said: "If he didn't know who we were at the start of the day, he probably does now.

"I've had stuff since I got called up. It gives you a bit more inspiration to fight and prove people wrong."

The ball's back in your court, Mr Hayden...

Stephan Shemilt is our man sunning himself out in Australia. And by sunning himself, I mean working hard, obviously.

    Here's his report from yesterday.

Hello! Welcome to day two of the first Ashes Test. I'll be honest, I'm completely disoriented. I went to sleep after eating my dinner at breakfast time and I woke up three hours ago. Not a coffee in sight, either.

We'll be bringing you all the action from the Gabba, along with Test Match Special's commentary and anything else that catches our eye. Play gets going at 23:30 GMT.

The Gabbatoir. Talk of ending careers. Fast bowlers being "nastier than Mitchell Johnson".

And yet, after all the trash talk and promises of super fast bowling, yesterday we were treated to a battle of wills between the accurate Australia bowlers and a careful England.

There are no demons in this pitch. England batted well. Australia fought back.

    Game on.
