  1. Good nightpublished at 02:12 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

And with that, I'll take my leave. You can read Stephan Shemilt's musings on today over here.

We'll be back bright and early (03:30 GMT, to be precise) on Saturday to see what England's response will be.

Thanks for your company - until then!

  2. 'I was proud of my efforts'published at 02:09 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

More from Steve Smith: "Our top six are in really good form - obviously it was good for me to get a few but also had a couple of good partnerships with Shaun Marsh and Pat Cummins to get ourselves in the lead.

"My century meant a lot. I really had to dig deep, work hard, show discipline and resilience. It's got to be up there with my best centuries. I was really proud of my efforts.

"Cameron Bancroft looked very good today - he had good plans, played straight and put away the loose balls.

On Bancroft-Bairstow: "It's all good. Cam doesn't think much of it so it's all good."

I reckon this was the most England pitch the tourists will find on this pitch, and they still had two collapses. They have to get better at playing the short ball.

  4. 'The tail won't get anything pitched up'published at 02:04 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

Australia captain Steve Smith, speaking to BT Sport: "The first Test of an Ashes series is very important, particularly knowing or record at the Gabba.

"There was a bit of pressure on us but we're pleased with the way we played and the result.

"We've made our intentions clear to the England tail - they're not going to get many pitched-up balls. But Adelaide is a different surface and with the pink ball."

And here's a little more from victorious captain Steve Smith, who is now sitting pretty with a 1-0 series lead.

  6. 'There'll be a stern talking to'published at 01:59 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

Trevor Bayliss has confirmed that there will be no disciplinary action against Bairstow.

"It gives a chance for the Australian team to bring it up on the field and make him feel uncomfortable. That's disappointing, we're better than that," he said.

"There'll be a stern talking to tonight. There's an understanding that everyone shook hands after the game. It was an opportunity for the Australians to capitalise on and have a few snide digs. We have to make sure we don't put ourselves into positions where they have opportunities to do that."

  8. 'There was no intent of malice'published at 01:54 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

Here is Jonny Bairstow speaking about the incident with Cameron Bancroft.

"I want to address you personally about the news that came over the last 24 hours. I think it was blown out of proportion.

"We were allowed out, no curfews and I caught up with some friends. We were in the bar, had a good laugh. Cameron and I enjoyed the evening and continues to do so.

"No intent of malice and, as you can, there was no animosity between myself or any of the Aussie players. We'll move on from there."

England have seven days now before the day-night Test gets under way. I seem to remember Alastair Cook scoring heavily the last time England played with a pink ball...

  10. Root rues missed chancespublished at 01:51 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

Joe Root, speaking to BT Sport: "The biggest regret is the chances we missed more than anything - we were 250 odd for four down and should make that 400 plus.

"For a lot of the game we played excellent cricket and were firmly on top but we've got to make sure we play it for longer times

"That's Steve Smith's slowest Test hundred. If we can't get him out then we can make him work extremely hard for it and take wickets at the other end."

This didn't feel like a 10-wicket thrashing. They went toe to toe for three days, and then sort of ran out of puff at the end of it.

  12. 'Smith took game away from us'published at 01:47 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

Joe Root, speaking at the post-match presentation: "Steve Smith played exceptionally well on that surface and took the game away from us.

"In that first innings we were looking to get 400 plus and put scoreboard pressure on them. Then with Australia 209-7 we were still looking to get a lead but we didn't and it's frustrating.

"Mark Stoneman and James Vince were excellent. To come in to your first Ashes Test away from home like that was exceptional. We showed great character at times - we've got to harness that and turn good starts into big scores."

David Warner is going down a very long line of Australia fans signing bats, caps and programmes. He posed for a picture with his two adorable children earlier on, though, after leading Australia to victory.

This Test was full of opportunity for England, so I'm not too downhearted. I think there might be changes for Adelaide. I don't think Jake Ball bowled particularly well here.

  15. Not bowling Anderson 'was wrong decision'published at 01:42 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

England captain Joe Root, on why James Anderson didn't bowl after lunch on day three with Australia 213-7: "It was gut feel at the time.

"Jimmy had bowled a lot of overs and we wanted to make sure those bowling at a new bat were fresh. Unfortunately, it was the wrong decision."

England head coach Trevor Bayliss on the same issue: "I didn't notice. James Anderson is fine, he's got bit of a sore shoulder where the ball hit him but he's fine."

Joe Root says James Anderson will be absolutely fine for next week. He says Moeen is feeling a bit uncomfortable with the finger but he too "should be fine" for Adelaide.

As if you needed it, here is another stat that underlines Steve Smith's dominance in this Test.

He has been named, quite unsurprisingly, the player of the match.

  18. 'We'll learn short ball lesson'published at 01:39 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2017

More from England captain Joe Root on TMS: "They showed some good character and fight, but we've got to bounce back and show resilience now.

"With the short ball the wicket was very two-paced, so to make sure you made the right decision was difficult. We've got to learn the lesson quickly and I'm sure we will."

That's interesting on Woakes - I thought he looked rusty. Jake Ball is the obvious candidate to drop out, should England want to make a change for Adelaide, with Craig Overton the obvious choice to replace him.

The Australian dressing room think Woakes bowled quite well. I think those three bowlers - Broad, Woakes and Anderson - are set, but maybe not Ball. They could go with Overton in Adelaide.
