    Malan b Cummins 29 (Eng 169-4)

Gone! What a player Pat Cummins is!

That's quick from Cummins, full and straight and perhaps with a hint of reverse swing, and it breaks through Dawid Malan's defence. There's a bit of a gap between bat and pad and the ball goes through, and the bails fly to the floor. Cummins wheels away in celebration as Malan looks crushed. What a partnership he's put on with his captain though.

  3. Eng 168-3published at 59 overs

Joe Root takes a single off the first ball of Josh Hazlewood's over, and then he and Malan exchange ideas to keep Australia waiting. There's still some bounce in this wicket for Hazlewood, as he gets one to lift, and Malan drops his hands. He pats away the rest of the over. Tim Paine had a word with Joe Root in between overs there. Both players went wandering away from the stump mic, but Root looked thoroughly irked at him and Handscomb, and Smith asked Root what was up.

Josh Hazlewood is coming back on. Root does need to watch himself against him..

Joe Root has just got to be careful. The Australians, particularly Cummins, are getting something going.

Root dropped on 56published at 58 overs

    Eng 167-3

This is so tense. Oh, and Cameron Bancroft has dropped Joe Root! Dearie me. Root absolutely creamed a cover drive at Bancroft who dived, got both his hands to it, and let it burst through. It's gone racing away for four, too.

Cummins follows it up with a delivery that raps Root, deep in his crease, on the pads. A penny for Steve Smith's thoughts, who looks like every close lbw shout is a jab to his ribs with a knitting needle. And Root will pick up two from the final ball of the over with another lovely drive.

England have got to be three down tonight. The second new ball is going to be the key.

Joe Root leans back and cracks a delivery down towards the man in the deep for a single off Nathan Lyon. Malan works another single before Lyon cracks Root on the pad. Again, Root leaves it on length. Again, Lyon pleads. Again, the umpire shakes his head. The Englansd fans made the requisite T-sign towards Steve Smith. That looked a touch high, and it's pitched outside leg. Another hustle off his pads brings Root a single.

Jonny Pitchfork: How am I supposed to be able to concentrate at work with this drama going on? Suddenly my 'to do list' has one thing on it.

Mickey Wallis: Working in Australia is great- I can sit watching with my evening beers. How anyone at home is actually working, I have no idea...

Adam C: Got the live feed open in the corner of my desktop whilst pretending to answer emails. We need more pink ball cricket in the Ashes.

This is a good over from Mitch Starc. He keeps things tight to Root, not offering him any width, and Root stays solid in defence. He drives nicely for one, Nathan Lyon throwing himself around like a salmon to stop the ball, before Malan drives rather edgily at the final ball from the over. There's a hint of swing there for Starc... Josh Hazlewood, meanwhile, is having to grin and bare the antics of the England fans as he fields down on the boundary.

    Target 354

A top edge from Dawid Malan but it somehow falls into empty space! It was too close to cut and the edge spooned up from Malan's bat, but it was nowhere near Smith at slip, who is looking properly disgruntled. I'd love to play poker against Smith. Oh, now Lyon's down on one knee, pleading with Aleem Dar as he strikes Malan on the pad! Aleem Dar shakes his head and the Barmy Army make a review sign to Steve Smith. Which, er, he can't do because he's used them all. Smith shouts something unprintable in response. That would have been umpire's call, had it gone upstairs.

Who would have thought when we came here, with all the talk of Australia's fast bowlers, that every England fan would be on the edge of their seat in fear of the off-spinner, Nathan Lyon?

The majority of the crowd are wrapped up in hoodies and blankets as Mitch Starc continues to stomp in. Root gets in behind and defends, before a loose drive goes on the bounce to the fielder at cover. Who will blink first? A maiden.

A delicate single fro Joe Root first up to Nathan Lyon, before Dawid Malan paddle sweeps for a couple. Malan looks more confident now, using his feet to Lyon to negate the spin, but Australia are still very sharp in the field. It's David Warner, tumbling at backward point once again, to cut off a cut from Malan.

This is riveting cricket - the best of the series so far. Australia are still favourites to win, but you sense a bit of twitchiness out there.

  18. Eng 151-3published at 52 overs

    Malan 25, Root 51

Four! That's good work from Dawid Malan, as Mitch Starc offers some width and Malan clatters it through backward point. That brings up the fifty stand too, from 103 balls.

And again! That's much streakier from Malan, the ball clattering into the inside edge and nipping over the stumps for four. Starc offers some helpful advice, before going full onto the pads, and Malan whips it away for a couple.

That's the third boundary of the over! There's two men on the boundary for the hook shot and Malan gets them to run into each other as he stands tall and rolls the ball into the ropes.

It's just enthralling. I think Malan is playing beautifully. He has dropped anchor.

I'm slightly panicky about this Starc spell to Root. Root looks a bit susceptible. I've decided to stand up. It worked for me and Alison before.

  20. Eng 137-3published at 51 overs

That's a nice cut from Dawid Malan as Nathan Lyon drops a bit short and wide, but a flying David Warner at backward point keeps it to a single. He's absolute dynamite in the field. Oh, that's a misjudgment from Root. Lyon goes fuller and Root, trying to work it off his pads, gets an inside edge that flies just beyond Cameron Bancroft at short leg. Paine and Lyon look agonised. Even Aleem Dar peers around Lyon with interest. Malan then pinches a quick single to keep things ticking along.
