Shot! Oh, the first ball after drinks is a half volley from Craig Overton, and Mitch Marsh cracks it back down the ground for four. And again! Short, outside off stump, and Marsh carves it past a fielder and away to the boundary. Smith gives him a thumbs up from the other end.

Umpire Erasmus then shows some footballing promise as he side foots another straight drive from Marsh. He gets a boo from the crowd for his troubles.

Off go the drinks. Craig Overton will resume bowling duties.

James Anderson doesn't bowl many no-balls. He bowled one in Brisbane in the first Test and that was his first since Adelaide in 2013.

So he's bowed two no balls in four years...

Lots of double teapots on show from England as they stand around during drinks.

Looking at the review that wasn't, Smith just got caught trying to play across his pad. Ball tracking says the ball would only have clipped the top of leg stump.

Joe Root is isolated, he doesn't get much back up from his team-mates when it comes to geeing up and cajoling. He doesn't have many lieutenants.

It's so quiet out there. It has the feeling of a team waiting for a declaration but England are still leading. It doesn't look like they believe they can still win this match.

The captaincy is a burden on Root and it's affecting him. It's affecting his batting and his fielding - he missed one at slip last night.

  6. drinks break

    Aus 370-4published at 103 overs

    Trail by 33

That's the first no ball of the innings. Steve Smith had a wry grin on his face when he saw that delivery flash up on the screen.

Anderson, meanwhile, shakes his heads and stomps off to get some refreshment. It's time for drinks.

  7. Not outpublished at 102.4 overs

    Aus 370-4

It's a no ball! James Anderson has overstepped.

It would have been umpire's call had the review gone through, by the way. England also keep their review.

  8. Postpublished at 06:10 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

Has James Anderson overstepped? I think he has. There looks to be very little behind the line as he runs in to bowl.

Aleem Dar's having a look at it from three angles.

  9. England reviewpublished at 102.4 overs

A review! It's England's last one, and they'er using it on an lbw shout against Steve Smith, because why not?

  10. Postpublished at 06:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

At this stage, anything is worth a try. Send for Paul Collingwood from the dressing room. He can tie up an end if nothing else.

James Anderson, looking distinctly miffed, is back on.

Could it be worth giving Malan a little trundle, to see how the Aussie pairing react to a new bowler, one that they have potentially never faced before? He’s got 52 first class wickets and his confidence will be high due to his performance with the bat - surely it’s worth a punt

  12. Aus 369-4published at 102 overs

    Trail by 34

Moeen makes a real meal of some fielding down on the boundary as he gets around to cut off a drive from Steve Smith, slides, and knocks the ball for four as he goes over the ropes. That takes Smith to 172 - the highest individual score in an Ashes Test at the Waca.

It also takes Australia to 368-4, which is exactly where England were when the collapse started yesterday. Smith hooks a single to prevent any mockers.

Paul Sutcliffe Boardman: That collapse by England for their last five or so wickets is going to be what costs us the game. Should have got 500 from where we were.

Are these the most distinctive floodlights in world sport? Rectangles on the end of massive concrete poles. Very 1970s, like something you would get in your Subbuteo set. Images of World Series Cricket. Soon lost to the Ashes.

  15. Aus 364-4published at 101 overs

Craig Overton's pumped. He races across at square leg and throws down the stumps, but Smith was home. Adam Gilchirst says Overton was absolutely livid with himself after his batting performance yesterday. He's been the best with the ball so far for England.

Moeen whirls through another over, as Marsh and Smith exchange singles.

  16. Aus 360-4published at 100 overs

Some good stuff from Craig Overton, a really accurate line, before Mitch Marsh gets his big foot forward and drives back down the ground for four. He gets some real power behind his shots - that looked to be nothing more than a push, yet it's flown past Overton and Stuart Broad.

An appeal! Overton gets one to trail across Marsh and pleads with the umpire. He says no, Marsh jogs a single and Jonny Bairstow tells Joe Root not to review it. That looked to be sliding down.

England still have the lead - remember that. Let's stay positive, Steve Smith is batting well but he's also mocking Mother Cricket with his extravagant leaves, so he'll get out soon.

    That's the way I think.

  18. Aus 355-4published at 99 overs

    Trail by 48

Steve Smith bunts a wide Moeen delivery away for two, and then absolutely fumes at himself for not smacking it to the boundary. He's so animated at the minute. Every time he doesn't cash in on something, he admonishes himself. Determination.
