Who'd be the England captain at the moment? They've been out there for nearly two whole sessions and taken just the one wicket.

    It's looking bleak for England.

    Lead by 3

Stuart Broad is in to his 24th over now. Even for a man as endlessly competitive as Broad, the weariness is showing. He has a shout against Mitch Marsh, the batsman missing a straight delivery, but there was a huge inside edge on that.

On the plus side, I've just been handed some caramel shortbread. It's the happiest I've been for about two days.

  6. Aus 405-4published at 110 overs

And that's the lead for Australia!

A gentle push from Steve Smith and he jogs, almost saunters, for a single. Mitch Marsh then adds to the lead with an edge past the stumps. It's so flat out there, in terms of the pitch and the mood.

If Smith's sitting at home bored, he goes on the bowling machine at the SCG. That's commitment.

  8. Aus 403-4published at 109 overs

    Smith 179, M Marsh 85

The scores are level, as Steve Smith crashes a cover drive and Moeen's fine dive stops the ball reaching the boundary.

England's shoulders just slump down that bit further.

England are still in front, albeit by one run. Here's Stuart Broad.

Steve Smith has an insatiable appetite for batting. How long before Joe Root has a bowl himself? The pace bowlers have been muted.

  11. Aus 402-4published at 108 overs

    Smith 179, Marsh 85

What a shot that is. Steve Smith leans back, opens the face of the bat and glides the ball past slip and away for a sumptuous four. That also brings up the 150 partnership. The milestones just keep coming for Australia.

Chris Woakes bowls straight at Smith, and protects England's meagre one-run lead for at least another over.

Just waking up? Why?! It's Saturday and (presumably) you have a normal life and job.

If you are up and with us, I bring bad news for anyone with an England angle.

There has been one wicket all day, Shaun Marsh feathering a catch to slip off the bowling of Moeen Ali. Other than that it's been another ticket to the Steve Smith show..

The Australia captain was 92 not out overnight and has progressed to 173 not out, barely coming under any real pressure at all.

Australia are now just six behind and will build a sizable lead if they carry on like this.

England's bowlers have offered very little indeed.

  13. Aus 397-4published at 107 overs

James Anderson finds the outside edge of Steve Smith's bat, it goes towards slip - and it bounces just in front of Cook! Everyone grins at one another, although there's a vein in Anderson's forehead that's another edge away from popping.

That's a gorgeous drive from Mitch Marsh, stroking the ball through the covers, and it's four. Oh, and another stonking straight drive to round off the over. That's been a highly profitable area for him today.

Ben: As the Ashes progresses I find myself trying to avoid Twitter as this is getting painful. Based on the 2.5 Tests so far a 5-0 whitewash is looking on the cards.

Daniel Stevanato: Stood on the the West Bank praying for a downpour tomorrow and Monday. Only chance of a draw. Will be amazed if Australia declare with a lead of less than 150.

  15. Aus 388-4published at 106 overs

A maiden! The second of the day!

Chris Woakes bowls a touch fuller and Mitch Marsh, on 77, is more than happy to defend back down the pitch.

  16. Postpublished at 06:26 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2017

Joe Root has turned back to Chris Woakes. The way this is going we'll be seeing Cook and Malan bowling in tandem soon.

    Trail by 15

A boundary to begin the over, as Mitch Marsh angles his bat and guides the ball down to third man. Anderson turns straight to Root, complains about the field and then bowls a full toss that Marsh cracks for four. Anderson had just changed the field, and then served up something easily hittable.

Alastair Cook's trying his best to gee a few players up, clapping his hands at slip as Anderson bowls a series of dots at Marsh. He then drives loosely, but the outside edge jags past the stumps, and Marsh ambles through for a single.

One maiden, from a bowling attack as accurate as England's can be, is ridiculous. It does show how well Australia have thrown them off their stride, though.

    Here's James Anderson.

England have bowled ONE maiden all day. There is no pressure on the Australians at all, they can score pretty much at will.
