    Cheers, Matt. A sterling effort.

Throughout this series England have often started off playing well and then it's all totally fallen apart.

Today they managed to totally fall apart but then rally to play well.

Which England will turn up in the final session?

That's all from me for now. The good news is I got through two of my 10 pieces of marzipan in that session. I'm sticking to the rule of only eating one when England take a wicket for now.

Jack Skelton is fully refueled on festive leftovers and is back to take you through the next period of play.

An entertaining session of cricket, that.

First England put the out of touch Cameron Bancroft out of his misery before that incredible David Warner moment before his century.

He was out caught on 99 off Tom Curran and was making his way off the field before he was reprieved as it was shown Tom Curran overstepped. Warner reached his century a ball later but in the end Curran's error cost just four runs as Anderson had the opener caught behind.

Australia scored 102-0 in the first session and 43-2 in the second. Good from England.

The sequence of dot balls in that second session built up the pressure and resulted in the wickets.

You just feel like get Steve Smith out cheaply and we're no longer looking at that huge score for Australia.

And that is tea. A probing final over from Stuart Broad but Steve Smith lets the final ball go.

That was very much England's session. I think we all feared Australia would rack up 300-plus today after the morning session but in the afternoon England have bowled 26 overs for 43 runs with two wickets.

  6. Aus 145-2published at 53.3 overs

Ooooooooo. A play and a miss from Steve Smith. Why does he never edge those!?

There's half an appeal from Jonny Bairstow and Alastair Cook but Stuart Broad says he didn't hear anything.

    Replays show Broad was right.

  7. Aus 144-2published at 53 overs

Chris Woakes seems to be going for the full, straight, aim at the pads ploy to Steve Smith. I have lost track of whether that's England's Plan A, B or Z to the Aussie skipper.

Smith looks just the same as he has throughout the series. He steps right across the stumps but uses the middle of his bat every time.

There'll be one more over before the interval.

Stuart Broad has now gone 67 overs without a wicket - his longest drought in Test cricket.

Double change for England. Stuart Broad is back into the attack. He gets the customary boo as his name is called. It's funny the Aussie crowd didn't boo David Warner when he hung around, shadowing a forward defensive, rather than walking off when he nicked Jimmy Anderson behind earlier.

That's a shoddy shot from Usman Khawaja. Wide from Broad and he swishes a bat and connects only with thin air. The Aussie number three is going nowhere. He has just nine from 56 balls.

    Just three minutes until tea.

To give you an idea of the size of the MCG, this has been taken from the very back row of the top tier. At Newcastle United's St James' Park, supporters can be half a mile from the centre spot. I wonder how far this is away from the middle?

A fine five-over spell from debutant Tom Curran has now come to an end. Chris Woakes is back and will be furious with his effort.

England have been really tight but Woakes bowls a half-volley to Steve Smith who takes three and then one on Usman Khawaja's hip which the Australian dispatches to the rope.

Seven from the over. Pressure released.

A hint of movement for Anderson but not the big swing we saw previously under the lights in the second Test. Smith gets off the mark with a single off his pads. England have been really, really good in this session. Just 34 runs have been scored in 22 overs with two wickets. Find another wicket before tea and it becomes an excellent session.

This is interesting. James Anderson is going to try that round the wicket ploy to Steve Smith that we saw with the pink ball in Adelaide.

    Will it work?

This innings is starting to tell a really strange story. Warner rattled along before lunch but everyone else has struggled to score. Usman Khawaja has just five runs from 47 balls. Only nine runs have come from the last 10 overs. Anderson and Curran have been excellent in that spell.

Curran bowls his fourth maiden and England's fourth in a row.

James Anderson is now level on 519 Test wickets with Courtney Walsh - joint fifth on the all-time list.

That's also 100 Ashes wickets for Anderson.

Now, just like in the previous games, England have an opening. Australian captain Steve Smith walks out to the crease and if Joe Root side can knock him over early then they're in with a sniff. But we all know that is a big if.

Smith defends his first two balls in his unconventional style as Anderson finishes a wicket maiden.

An excellent, probing delivery from Anderson. That's a result of bowling well in pairs. Anderson and Curran have dried things up, kept things tight - it just starts to create that pressure.
