  1. Aus 243-4published at 110 overs

    Smith 94, M Marsh 21

"Get on with it!" yells someone in the crowd.

There you go - Broad strays wide and Marsh cuts him away through backward point for four.

A inside edge into leg then sees him add another to the total.

Here's Smith on 94 - no chance he'll hit a six to get to three figures. Sure enough - defence, defence.

The crowd are just waiting for the inevitable unless something special happens.

  3. Aus 238-4published at 04:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2017

A tired and exasperated James Anderson sends down six solid deliveries and gets nothing for it yet again.

Just a single to Mitchell Marsh.

  4. Aus 237-4published at 108 overs

    Lead by 73

Tidy again from Broad, but it's so easy for Smith and Marsh just to knock a single each.

I think that did carry but the slips are so close because the pitch is so slow.

  7. Aus 235-4published at 107 overs

    Smith 93, M Marsh 14

Steve Smith has edged a ball!

But symptomatic of England's fortunes on this tour, it flies through the slips for four.

It would have been a blinder of a catch, it went very low and maybe even bounced before the man thanks to this slow pitch.

On the Aussie skipper goes, working another single to move to 93.

That was Mitchell Marsh's first scoring shot in 37 deliveries.

  9. Aus 230-4published at 106 overs

    Lead by 66

Smith pull a short ball to leg for one before England groan as Marsh defends the next two, one kept a little low but now much else there.

Broad searching for the yorker but doesn't get it far enough up there and Marsh strokes it nicely through the covers for four. That means his strike rate 'rockets' up to 14.

Ooof. He nearly chops onto his stumps next up but edges it into his upper thigh instead.

Stuart Broad is at the end of his run on the pitch. First ball to Steve Smith, here we go...

Stop playing Test matches on rubbish pitches. It's tragic that a Test match that so many people have travelled across the world to see won't finish in a result because the pitch is so bad.

    Cheers, Matt. Excellent knock.

"If England can pick up a couple of quick wickets..."

That might be the epitaph of this tour for England. They've rarely been able to get that burst of wickets just when they've needed it.

But hey, let's see. Something might spark it - a pearler of a delivery, a rash shot, a change of live texter perhaps?

A waterlogged tennis ball, a golf ball, a squash ball. I think Steve Smith could still defend his wicket even when batting with a stick of bamboo.

Keep your suggestions coming of how to get the Australian captain out though. They're keeping us entertained here in an empty office.

It is now time for me to hand back to Jack Skelton, who will take you through the Australia collapse and England run chase (maybe). If that doesn't happen this may be the last time you hear from me in this Test. It has been a pleasure.

It seems beyond belief that England still don't have a full-time spin coach. Saqlain Mushtaq is on a part-time deal so he's back home now when Moeen Ali needs him most.

Andrew Strauss phoned me up to talk about the spin coach position. I'd never considered coaching, but thought, 'Here we go'. And he said he was going for Saqlain Mushtaq.

It would appear that frantically refreshing my screen every few seconds doesn't get him out. I'm out of ideas. Maybe use a waterlogged tennis ball.

There was a brief spell after lunch when England looked threatening. Mitchell Marsh hit one in the air a few yards short of gully and the ball went past the edge of both his and Steve Smith's bat a couple of times.

Since then Marsh has just blocked, blocked and blocked again while Steve Smith has slowly nudged his way towards another century.

England will have a last burst after tea but this game seems to be heading only one way. The captains could shake hands on a draw when there are 15 overs remaining.

The door was open at lunchtime but it looks like Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh have not only slammed it shut, but put the key in and turned the lock.

And probably put in the code as well.

  18. Tea - Aus 225-4published at 105 overs

    36 overs remaining

James Anderson to bowl the final over before tea and Steve Smith takes a single to take him to 87. Unlucky for some down under. Marsh blocks out the rest of the over.

That's that for the session and I think it's safe to say the match. It would take something extraordinary from here.

Australia lead by 61 runs. England still need six wickets after a wicketless session.

Are England going to review? They're thinking about it.... No. Time is up.

Broad gets one to swing in towards Mitchell Marsh's pads and the slips go up for lbw. It's a stifled appeal anyway and it sounded very woody. Broad didn't even appeal.

Yep replays show that came right out of the middle of the bat. There'll be one more over before tea.
