  1. Aus 101-2published at 36 overs

Shot! James Anderson goes short and Khawaja reads it quickly, rocking back and pulling the ball away to the boundary. Anderson readjusts, spearing the ball in to Khawaja, and he tucks himself up in defence.

It's all rather sedate at the SCG at the minute, the crowd just milling back to their seats.

And from the other end it'll be James Anderson.

A bit too short this from Moeen, and Usman Khawaja can drop his hands and roll a single away.

That's absolute dross from Moeen, a long hop that Steve Smith somehow contrives to hit to a fielder. He looks disgusted with himself for missing out on that.

It'll be Moeen Ali first up after tea, with Usman Khawaja in his sights.

I am seriously flagging. If anyone has any tips on how best to stay awake, do let me know. I've dipped from my earlier sugar rush.

The players are back out in the middle, with Joe Root and Alastair Cook having a brief meeting of minds. They're followed out by Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith.

Steve Smith converts fifties into hundreds because he just plays his own way, without risk.

Joe Root gets out between 50 and 100 because he plays unnecessarily risky shots. To become a great player, he needs to realise when the hook or pull is getting him into trouble and shelve them.

As ever, England's chances hinge on whether they can find a way of removing Steve Smith before he does real damage.

The Aussie skipper is three not out at tea and looking to cap off a monumental series with a century on his home ground.

The pitch is still playing OK. There's a lot there for the spinners, if they get it right. If they get rid of Steve Smith, England are well in the Test match. If Steve Smith isn't out by the close of play, then this could take on a similar scenario to Brisbane.

So England lead by 250 runs at tea on day two at the SCG.

That session drifted for a while after Stuart Broad bowled Cameron Bancroft early on, the Aussie opener playing a loose drive around a good ball that angled back in.

David Warner then looked in imperious form, ably supported by Usman Khawaja, who survived some early nerves against Moeen Ali.

But James Anderson produced a peach to have Warner edging behind for 56. An even session and England will go again at Khawaja and Steve Smith in the evening session.

Anderson strays too far wide trying to tempt Smith into something loose and the Aussie captain drives away to deep cover for three.

So Anderson will have a maximum of three balls at Khawaja before tea.

The first is left well alone. Khawaja then turns the second to mid-wicket for no run.

Last ball before tea - it's short and Khawaja pulls it away to fine leg for one.

Josh Withers: Disagree with anyone who says Jimmy has had a bad series, rarely bowled a bad over let alone a bad spell.

  16. Aus 92-2published at 33 overs

Frustration for England as Moeen drops short and lets Khawaja slap it away past backward point to the fence.

Time for one more over before tea. James Anderson to Steve Smith. England would be ahead in this game if they removed the Aussie skipper now.

Replays show Anderson sent that down like an off-cutter and it got a bit of nibble off the pitch. Tremendous variation from the canny Lancashire man.

Here comes Steve Smith. Is he any good?
