It just shows you the value of the short ball when it's bowled with precision - both in terms of height and how close it is to the batsman. Ferguson got that just right.

    Bairstow c sub (Astle) b Ferguson 37 (Eng 86-3)

Oh Jonny you haven't just done that. Catching practice.

Ferguson bowls a bouncer but Jonny Bairstow still looks to have plenty of time. He guides an upper cut down to third man but there's a fielder there. It goes straight to him.

Todd Astle, the sub fielder, fumbles it a little but eventually pulls the ball into his chest.

That catch doesn't look any easier on the replays. It was tough. He was at full stretch. One of those that you just hope sticks in the glove.

The crowd are a little disheartened though. There's almost silence throughout Santner's latest over which costs four.

That was a little bit higher and you lose control of it playing shots up there. So well bowled Ferguson, you've created a chance.

  5. dropped catch

Morgan dropped on 28published at 14 overs

Big moment. This one is quicker from Lockie Ferguson - a bouncer that races onto Morgan and takes a top edge. Tom Latham jumps and throws a glove up high but the ball hits the left hand and drops out. Big chance.

Ferguson looks like he might explode.

Eoin Morgan is in some touch.

  7. 6 runs

    Eng 78-2published at 13.5 overs

I must admit this is the first time I've seen Lockie Ferguson bowl.

He isn't the tallest but is well built, dressed in the customary all black kit but matched with black boots too.

If he can bowl at 90mph he hasn't shown it yet. Short and Morgan loves it. He smashes a second six.

    Need 154 to win

Eight from that over from Santner. Morgan has 21 from just 14 balls. He's off to a flier.

Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is coming into the attack for New Zealand. Rumour has it he can get it up comfortably over 90mph. England must be sick of hearing that.

  9. 6 runs

    Eng 70-2published at 12.3 overs

    Oh, Eoin.

The England skipper looks in some nick. A bit of flight from Santner and Morgan just punts the ball over mid off for six.

Easy as you like. That looked so simple.

Tim Southee needs to find someone that is capable of slowing the scoring and getting a wicket. What is the plan?

That catch from Colin de Grandhomme? It was pretty special...

That's how to hit a proper boundary. Full from Trent Boult with a scrambled seam and Morgan guides it through the covers for four with minimal fuss.

And again! This is even better, a fair bit straighter.

Three fours in a row for Morgan.

  13. Eng 53-2published at 11.2 overs

Lucky. A top edge from Eoin Morgan flies over the top of the wicketkeeper Tom Latham for four. If New Zealand fancied the short bowling to Morgan before they will even more now.

    50 up.

  14. Eng 49-2published at 11 overs

    Need 175 runs to win

Eoin Morgan turns down a quick single with a big Dublin bellow of "no". You wouldn't want to be the fifth man run out today. Morgan does get his score moving on the next ball but that's a good over from Santner. Just a couple from it.

  15. Eng 47-2published at 10 overs

    Target 224

Eoin Morgan is the new man and gets a bouncer first up. Australia fancied the short stuff to England's skipper and the New Zealanders have been watching.

This is well poised after the first 10 overs.

We have seen some excellent, stunning, outstanding - whatever you want to call it - catching today. And that one is very, very special.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.5 overs

    Root c De Grandhomme b Boult 9 (Eng 47-2)

The best catch of the lot?

I'm struggling to keep up with all the stunners we've seen in this match. Joe Root flicks one from Boult off his toes and immediately calls for a run. He thinks he's beaten the in-field but Colin de Grandhomme has other ideas at mid-wicket. He throws himself to his right and snatches the ball in one hand low just above the grass. Big wicket.

  18. Eng 47-1published at 9.4 overs

Risky from Root as he tries to guide the ball to third man but chops the ball into the ground near the base of his stumps.

That's better. A conventional drive from the Yorkie but Mark Chapman dives well to his left to prevent another four. Great athleticism but to be fair he only looks about 14. He should be able to move like that.

  19. Eng 47-1published at 9 overs

    Bairstow 28, Root 9

Too short. A half-tracker from Mitch Santner and Joe Root doesn't miss those. He pulls over mid-wicket for another four. New Zealand only managed seven fours in the first 19 overs. England have that many already and a six.

  20. Postpublished at 05:51 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

He made an excellent 63 earlier and he's already taken an excellent catch so what can Mitchell Santner do with the ball?

We're going to get an early look at the spinner.
