Shot! That's James Vince off the mark with one of those trademark cover drives.

You know how there's always a scruffy bloke at the club whose jumper loses its elasticity? James VInce's jumper is flapping around.

Cook really didn't need to play at that. He just pushed at it with no real convinction. Not a happy bunny as he walks off.

James Vince is the next man in.

He's livid with himself - he's played at a ball he didn't need to, it would have missed off stump by a foot. Good channel bowling from Trent Boult - it finishes off a pretty disappointing winter for Cook, apart from that mammoth knock at Melbourne. Those big opening partnerships of the Strauss-Cook days seem a long time ago.

    Ah.

You know what I said about Alastair Cook's feet? Yeah, there's no foot movement there.

It's a nothing sort of push from Cook, his feet staying still, bat just dangling away from his body, and the ball takes the outside edge. BJ Watling, diving to his left, snaffles the catch and Cook looks thoroughly irked as he walks off.

If Cook looks timid, he tends to get out a bit more. When he goes after the ball, he's more comfortable.

  7. Eng 23-0published at 8 overs

Alastair Cook's moving his feet better than he was in the first innings.

Oh, and that'll be four! Cook cuts, and cuts hard, and a thick edge goes flying over the slip cordon and away to the boundary.

Rob Holden: I think Stoneman, Vince and even possibly Malan, HAVE to put shifts in here. Although we seem to have limited resources, these positions are seriously up for grabs. Somebody in CC could well hit a big score soon!

Two slips in place for Tim Southee, who bangs in a poor short ball and gets pulled to the mid-wicket boundary by Alastair Cook. That's a rubbish length from Southee, and a fine shot from Cook to boot.

Southee responds by beating the edge of Cook's bat.

I don't mind seeing them bowling short to Cookie early on - it gets his eye in!

I've been watching Cookie move, I think his back's a bit stiff - he's moving even more like Woody from Toy Story than normal.

  11. Eng 15-0published at 7 overs

    Stoneman 8, Cook 6

Short goes Trent Boult, and Alastair Cook pulls it safely around the corner for a single.

Cook's forced to scramble to get back into his crease as Mark Stoneman calls him through for a quick single and then changes his mind, but Neil Wagner's throw drifts wide of the stumps.

The last time I saw Sir Richard Hadlee was during the 1996 World Cup, commentating with Bryan Waddle in Madras (now Chennai) on an Australia-New Zealand quarter-final., external Bryan had been in India for quite a long time with planes, trains and automobiles - and he was in agony because he desperately wanted to beat Australia, but also wanted to go home and had a flight booked that evening!

New Zealand played very well - and lost. Shane Warne came in as a pinch-hitter and although he didn't get very many, he changed the game.

I don't want to tempt fate, but there's not a lot of swing there for Tim Southee.

A leading edge allows Mark Stoneman to scamper through for two, before hopping onto his toes and driving Southee for a handsome boundary.

Sir Richard Hadlee on the spirit of cricket: "The spirit of the game still exists. My father, Walter, played for New Zealand. Cyril Washbrook, the England opener, was given out lbw to a bad decision.

"Cyril had hit the ball and my dad was fielding at mid-off when he was walking back to the pavilion. As skipper he went to him, asked him if he'd hit it, and then went to the umpire and told him he wanted to withdraw the appeal.

"Cyril came back and got 56. Dad said 'In our mind, our conscience is clear because we did the right thing. That's a great value to have."

Tim J Baxter: What a great interview with Sir Richard Hadlee on TMS. Talking 'proper' cricket. When a call for respect, honesty and integrity comes from such a respected guy it surely deserves to be heard. I can't ever recall anyone say a bad word about him in any interview.

More from Sir Richard Hadlee: "When Trevor Chappell bowled the underarm delivery, it was legal at the time and he was told to by his captain.

"He's lived with that for 40 years and it's affected his life greatly.

"The three Australians will have to live with that for life and be tagged and branded. Those guys are role models. They set the standards for future players."
