Sir Richard Hadlee on the ball-tampering issue: "I think you have to make examples of people. It's deliberate cheating. You've been caught and lied about it.

"I think when you're the captain you're responsible for fair play and sportsmanship and you should lead from the front, and Steve Smith didn't.

"The 12-month ban is severe but unfortunately these guys are labelled as cheats and they will have to live with that for life."

Sir Richard Hadlee, speaking to Test Match Special: "We didn't know what reverse swing was. We'd never heard of the term and sometimes I'd be looking to bowl an outswinger and all of a sudden, it's an inswinger.

"I'm on record as saying why can't the bowler play around with the ball? A bit of lip cream gets on the ball, there might be some sun lotion on your face - so why not use what is natural on your body, like saliva?

"Then it's fair for everybody. No artificial things, like bottle tops or sandpaper. "

    New Zealand's session on balance.

Tim Southee played some excellent counter-attacking shots to bring up his 50 before he was bowled by James Anderson, who also made the breakthrough as he cleaned up BJ Watling's stumps with an absolute beauty.

Stuart Broad nipped out Ish Sodhi to claim a five-wicket haul but then England lost their way, sending down too many short balls as Neil Wagner and Trent Boult merrily swung away.

They put on 39 for the last wicket before Boult holed out to fine leg, with New Zealand all out for 278, trailing by 29 - a tremendous effort after they were 36-5 on day two.

Alastair Cook and Mark Stoneman will resume after lunch with England 7-0 and leading by 36.

It's a good game. New Zealand will be happy with that morning. They would have settled for England having a 36-run lead after the start they had with the bat. They're right back in the game.

    Lead by 36

Trent Boult to bowl what should be the final over before lunch.

Alastair Cook nudges the first delivery into off and scampers a single.

Mark Stoneman takes a short ball to the body, not looking entirely convincing.

He survives though and gets off the mark with a couple through the covers. And that's lunch.

Stoneman faces just his second ball and it deflects off his hip for a leg bye.

Cook faces the rest of Boult's over - looking to be positive to a few balls and leaving the other couple, all for no run.
