They've all missed out - Stoneman, Vince, Root and Malan all could have got a hundred, and yet they were all dismissed pretty quickly after passing 50.

Root's winter has been disappointing in that he's averaged over 40, got seven half-centuries and no centuries. He's such a better player than that. He should have three centuries in that lot.

Disappointed with Root’s captaincy again. The danger was the new ball. When New Zealand didn’t take it, England should have made hay and really gone after the Kiwi bowlers, yet they were happy to plod along at near to snail’s pace. Clueless.

There's a very competitive dad bowling in front of us - he's just bowled his son a bouncer!

OK, that first session was in parts intriguing and in others interminable.

Hopefully there will be more action in the second session, which Amy Lofthouse will guide you through.

    Catch you later.

This is a decent Test match - it's fluctuating and there are talking points.

I think it's a pretty good session for both teams. It's got the game moving forward. I still think the best chance for a result is England lead by 350 and then get longer to bowl. I don't want a draw in this game. I'd like to see them gamble a little bit.

Resuming on 202-3, Joe Root and Dawid Malan accumulated steadily to both pass fifty as New Zealand stuck with the old ball and slowed the game down. A lot.

It paid off eventually though as Malan chipped Colin de Grandhomme to mid-wicket and Root edged a flashy drive to Neil Wagner behind.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow have covered up and got their side through to lunch without further damage.

So England lead by 307 - what will be the approach after lunch? The tourists will want to be bowling at New Zealand in the final session today.

Trent Boult to bowl the last over before lunch and he concedes just a leg bye from it.

And that's that for the morning session.

Ben Stokes walks off unbeaten on 12, with Jonny Bairstow two not out.

There is a bit of swing with this new ball. Colin de Grandhomme is moving it away from the right-hander. When England do bowl, they'll be watching that and thinking the conditions are ripe and right for swing bowling.

Joe Gibney: Six overs in the last 35 minutes. In T20 you are ordered to bowl your 20 overs in 75 or 80 minutes or face penalties. Guess which type of cricket is dying (even though it's my favourite) and which type gets more popular by the year.

Bairstow plays out a maiden from De Grandhomme.

Bit of swing there for the big man. Messrs Anderson and Broad will be pleased to see that.

On Twitter:, external Brilliant. Now we get to watch a whole new pair having to be circumspect. Up to lunch, and for at least 45 minutes after it. If they’re lucky. This is deliciously masochistic. No sleep tonight.

Boult continues and Stokes flicks it fine for a couple.

This pair seem content just to get through to lunch in just over five minutes and reassess.

Tony: Hmm, not great to lose Root right after Malan but I think we almost have enough of a lead to win.

Adam Davies: Let's be honest. Every time Bairstow and Stokes come together we are hoping for a Cape Town mark II. Just whack it lads.

Maybe a fit and firing Tim Southee would have reacted a bit quicker, but he's been unwell this morning.
