  1. Eng 270-5published at 89.2 overs

Stokes gets in a big stride forward and tries to whip it through mid-wicket but misses and the ball hits the pads.

Big appeal but not given. Kane Williamson then flips the ball into the stumps but Stokes' bat was back in his crease.

  2. Eng 270-5published at 89.1 overs

Tim Southee is back out there but clearly still feeling a bit ill, as Colin de Grandhomme will share the new ball.

And he sends down a no ball that Ben Stokes flicks away for four.

Ben Edgecumbe: Another time where Root fails to convert! Great player but it’s actually becoming a problem now.

VB: Before anyone bemoans Root failing to convert again, would you rather an unconverted 50 or a Vince/Cook 15?

  5. Eng 265-5published at 89 overs

    Lead by 294

Ben Stokes gets off the mark with a single, an inside edge running through square leg.

Jonny Bairstow gets under way with a couple, flicking it into leg.

There's a certain look about the field now.

  8. Eng 262-5published at 88 overs

New man Jonny Bairstow plays down the wrong line and the ball clatters into the pads.

Huge appeal from Neil Wagner but not given and New Zealand have no reviews left.

It was pitching outside leg anyway with the left-armer Wagner bowling over the wicket.

Slowing the game down, not taking the new ball - you wonder if that might be something in hindsight that New Zealand will look back and regret.

New Zealand have now got Stokes and Bairstow in. You can see them gathering and Williamson doing quite a bit of thinking and talking. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he asks Boult how he feels about taking the new ball and having a crack at England.

  11. wicket

    Root c Watling b Wagner 54 (Eng 262-5)

Why bother with the new ball, if you can do this with the old one.

Joe Root once again fails to convert a fine start as he flashes as a wide one from Neil Wagner and edges it through to BJ Watling, who takes a fine diving catch.

The England captain trudges off looking dejected and exasperated.

The lead is still under 300 - can New Zealand blitz through these final five wickets and give themselves a chance of victory?

A wicket that breaks the sequence of just four bowlers taking all the wickets in this game so far.

  13. wicket

    Malan c Nicholls b De Grandhomme 53 (Eng 262-4)

Out of nowhere, Dawid Malan is gone.

Colin de Grandhomme goes round the wicket and Malan tries to clip it through mid-wicket but mistimes it and ends up chipping it straight to Henry Nicholls.

He'll be livid - there was no danger in that delivery.

Could this at least force England and/or New Zealand's hand? Ben Stokes is coming out and could up the scoring rate. The Kiwis might attack with the new ball now they've got one out.

At lunch, you can hear from former England opener Nick Compton about the tour of New Zealand in 2013, when Compton made two centuries in two matches.

Lunch is due to start at roughly 01:30 BST.

Graystoke: A terrible advert for Test cricket. Even with the saving grace of TMS. I'm turning over to the baseball shortly, which is pretty sad.

Natasha Louise: Dear umpires, please get this over-rate moving! We'll be here until Christmas at this rate!

Kiwi 12th man Matt Henry is out on the field. It appears Tim Southee is off due to illness.

It could be a factor in New Zealand not taking the new ball, but I'd wager it's a tactical decision by Kane Williamson.

Sean Broughton: Please get on with it. The slow hand claps will start soon. There's a man playing cricket with his kids with a flip flop and a tennis ball next to me in the crowd. That's more entertaining than the last hour of cricket on the field.

Four overs in 25 minutes! I'm sorry, but out comes the little card. There are ways of handling these situations.

Malan clips it fine for one more. This isn't great to watch.
