Calum, Edinburgh: Surely Wood can't justify his place much longer? Never looks like taking a wicket. Plunkett a way better option in the short term. What a shame about Steven Finn's career!

Kai: What actually is the story with the England selection? Fun as it is to be sceptical and talk about incompetence or fantastical corruption, I’m assuming there IS some logic and reason to all the decisions about keeping Stoneman and Vince, but ditching Tom Curran (who has a higher average than both?) and Craig Overton.

I reckon today is the fourth time that two wickets have fallen to the first two balls of the day in a Test. Chuck Fleetwood-Smith did it in 1937, Graham Onions did it at Edgbaston in 2009, and James Anderson did it against West Indies last year.

An excited Jeremy Coney: That wasn't the game against West Indies, which they came back and won, was it?

Right, I'll hand over to Amy Lofthouse to take you through lunch and the second session.

I'll be back for the third... if needed...

A really good session of cricket, with hard-fought defence at the end. I wonder how Raval looks back. It was a gift of a wicket, and it set the whole ball rolling.

That was a terrific session, set up perfectly by that incredible start.

If you missed it (and even if you didn't, because it's worth repeating), Stuart Broad took two wickets with the first two balls of the day.

The first was a ropey half-volley that Jeet Raval carelessly clipped to square leg to depart for 17. The second was a beauty, rising sharply off a length and forcing captain Kane Williamson to nick behind for a golden duck.

Ross Taylor came in and looked shaky before he gifted Jack Leach his first Test wicket by lapping a sweep shot straight to Alastair Cook at short third man, just after Joe Root had brought him up in a catching position.

Cook was in the action again, safely snaffling a catch in the slips as James Anderson removed Henry Nicholls for 13.

But Tom Latham has shown stoic resistance in getting through to lunch unbeaten on 65 and BJ Watling (15 not out) has also looked assured. England will regroup and go again after the interval.

It was a brilliant start by England. Broad's two wickets really gave England belief that they could win.

We've had 29 overs this morning. It's been a good over rate, and that's important for England.

  9. Interval - NZ 124-4published at 52 overs

NZ need 258 runs to win, Eng need six wickets

Wood gets one to come back into Latham, who does just about enough to fend it back down the pitch.

Latham then guides it past the slip cordon down to third man for a couple.

Decent pace from Wood as he spears in at the pads and Latham clips to mid-wicket for no run.

Here's the final ball before lunch...and Latham taps it to extra cover to ensure he bats through the first session, while most have fallen around him.

This is going to be a huge over for England. They've had a brilliant morning session - but what they'd give for five now.

New Zealand will be buoyed by the past 45 minutes. They've batted really well.

Will Mark Wood grant Darcey's Dad's wish?

The Durham man will bowl the final over before lunch. Tom Latham facing. Here we go...

Having been ousted from my bed - Darcey feeling poorly and has got in bed with her mum - and not working tomorrow, I could in theory listen for as long as this takes. I'd rather not though, so if we could have one more wicket before lunch please, England, so I can use the 40 minutes to fall asleep contentedly?

Watling clips a full ball into the leg side for a couple before Stokes replies with five dot balls.

A couple of minutes until lunch - they'll get another over in.

I can't believe how many players have been caught at mid-wicket in this Test - there are three I can think of. Stokes yesterday was a pretty soft dismissal, and then Raval got out today in the same way.

Can England squeeze in two more overs before lunch?

They'll get one at least and it'll be Ben Stokes to bowl it.

I think Watling is the man they really want because of the way he batted in that first innings.

    Latham 63, Watling 13

A third straight maiden in a row for England.

Wood stays round the wicket to Latham, who leaves well outside his off stump and covers up when required.

Watling has no interest in taking any risks with only 10 minutes until lunch.

    Stokes starts with a maiden.

Ben Stokes is one of the most natural bowlers I've ever seen, he can swing it both ways at good pace.
