But Finch finally fell for a superb 84, caught superbly by Chris Jordan after he skied one that Adil Rashid bravely tossed up...

Indeed, Rashid and Jordan ripped through the Australia line-up, picking up three wickets apiece.

The leg-spinner in particular tormented the Aussies again, finishing with 3-27 to secure man of the match.

Australia captain Aaron Finch was starved of the strike early on but made up for it with a blistering knock, targeting Moeen Ali in particular to give his side a chance...

Jos Buttler has scored 489 runs in his past seven T20 innings, at a strike-rate of 170.

Only three players have scored more in seven innings - Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and Michael Klinger.

Jos Buttler was promoted to open and fully vindicated that move with a majestic 61, reaching his fifty off just 22 balls - the fastest-ever in T20s by an England batsman...

Alex Hales was in the mood too - clattering 49 off 24 balls...

While the in-form Jonny Bairstow had to wait until number six to bat, such is England's depth. It was worth the wait though, this maximum propelling England to 221-5, their second-highest score in T20s...

England captain Eoin Morgan on TMS: "We're on a bit of a high, which is great. When you're on top of your game you want to make the most of it. As a unit today we really were - from the get-go.

"Jos Buttler and Jason Roy were outstanding at the top of the order. Alex Hales, Joe Root and then Jonny at the end - it took us to an above-par total, which we needed.

"Our bowlers continued to take wickets. Adil Rashid really did the game into his hands by getting that big wicket of Finch."

Michael Dearden: Well done England, another excellent performance. Now let's see what happens against a good team, India. It won't be so easy that's for certain.

  10. 'India series really waters the mouth'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

England captain Eoin Morgan, speaking to TMS, on the India series: "It's going to be a great opportunity. It's going to be a huge challenge as well. They're a strong side who are consistent in all three formats - and they'll be hungry to do well.

"A tour to England which starts with three T20s and finishes with five Tests really does water the mouth. I'm sure they'll be as excited about it as we are."

These cricketers are at the top of their game, but they're always looking to improve.

Eoin Morgan, speaking on Sky Sports: "It's a different format but a similar squad to the ODIs and that was another fantastic performance.

"We started really well with Jos Buttler and Jason Roy expressing themselves and we managed to kick on. With Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali down the order we could keep coming and hit 20-30 over par.

"But we really needed them because Australia batted really well. Thankfully we got a few important wickets that cost them at the end.

"We've got guys banging down the door and five of the top six guys could open the batting. We need to find the right combination that will help us win a tournament. I don't think we've found it yet but with two years until the World T20, this is the right time to start finding out."

Man of the match Adil Rashid: "It's been OK so far. Hard work in the nets always pays off. It's about being confident and having a positive mindset.

"Even when Finchy was going well, I need to back myself. It's crucial having a skipper like Morgs - he gives the bowlers confidence to do their skills."

Eoin Morgan is the best captain I've ever played under, in terms of his leadership skills off the field. The respect he commands in the dressing room is second to none - when he speaks everybody listens. That is so important. I always felt he could improve with his tactics on the field - and I'm seeing that now.

He has grown tremendously. As England have developed, he has grown as a leader and a captain.

England captain Eoin Morgan on TMS: "After a fast start you can sometimes fall short of 200 if you lose wickets but we got up to 220, which was a fantastic effort.

We're riding high at the moment - they're missing some players but in the winter they had their strongest side out and we beat them 4-1 in Australia."

You always see Morgan cool, calm and collected. You never see a reaction. It might be different inside, but you never see that. He's got good right-hand men - and he has that in Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Ben Stokes.

This is his ship - he runs it.
