T20 Blast: Luke Wright backs Sussex to lift trophy

Sussex Sharks captain Luke Wright is confident Sussex Sharks can lift their first T20 title since 2009.

Sharks face Somerset in today's second semi-final at Edgbaston and after an eye-catching journey through the South Group and the quarter-finals, Wright says the mood in the squad is buoyant.

It is 13 long years since Somerset lifted what was then the Twenty20 Cup with victory over Lancashire at The Oval.

But hopes are high that they could become English cricket's short-form kings again on their sixth Finals Day appearance.

They topped their group after a sluggish start, helped by a run of nine wins in 10 games, with New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson smashing 460 runs at a strike rate of 173.58.

Anderson missed out in their semi-final against Notts Outlaws, but Lewis Gregory's unbeaten 60 off 24 balls carried them to a total of 209-5 and 5-47 from pace bowler Jamie Overton sealed a 19-run win.

If those three produce performances like that today, they may be filling the trophy with cider instead of champagne in a few hours time.

Edgbaston, August 2009 - the last time Sussex lifted the T20 trophy.

Their opponents in the final that evening? Somerset of course.

The Sharks were victorious by 63 runs thanks to 59 off 26 balls from opener Dwayne Smith. James Kirtley also did the damage with the ball, taking 3-9.

Luke Wright (pictured above right with Ed Joyce) was part of that victorious side. Can he inspire Sussex By The Sea to another glorious night in Birmingham?

Gloucestershire haven't reached Finals Day since 2007 - but their gorilla mascot Alfred is certainly familiar with Edgbaston.

He's won the mascot race for the past two years and has his sights on a hat-trick in today's fun-for-all-the-family-free-for-all.

Will the others again have to gape at the ape from the rear, or is one of them in the right shape to beat him to the tape? The race is coming right up. We'll let you know the result.

Sussex Sharks have won the toss and will bat first in the second semi-final.

Both teams stick with the same XIs that saw them safely through the quarter-finals.

Lewis Gregory reckons he has "the best bowling attack in the competition" so he won't be too disappointed by Luke Wright's decision.

Perhaps a surprise that England's Craig Overton isn't in the Somerset side, though?

Somerset: Myburgh, Davies, Trego, Hildreth, Abell, Anderson, Gregory (c), van der Merwe, J Overton, Taylor, Waller.

That partnership between Ben Cox and Ed Barnard was where the game was won and lost.

They played really sensibly and maturely, they built the partnership up and accelerated towards the end and that 19th over was a huge momentum changer in the game and gave them a lot of confidence.

Lancashire never seemed to get going with the bat and never had a solid partnership like Worcestershire had.
