    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC cricket correspondent in Galle

Sam Curran’s come in and played very sensibly and I’ve been really impressed with Ben Foakes

He’s batted properly, it's as simple as that, playing every ball as it should be played. He’s looked very calm, assured and totally at home even though he came in with England in trouble.

But the debate will continue about this positive style of play England wanted to adopt for this series. I think it is up to the openers and top order batsman to get their heads down and get through the first session. Imagine Geoffrey Boycott watching this morning, he’d be frothing at the mouth.

Nobody has taken more Test wickets than Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan, and the great one has been speaking to BBC Sinhala's Azzam Ameen.

He says that Sri Lanka will miss the retiring Rangana Herath but admits that he doesn't watch the team.

"See, unfortunately, in the last three to four years I don't watch cricket. I was so disappointed with our cricket administration and the board, the way they run cricket, so my interest is also gone off.

"I don't know some of the player's names also."

As we've mentioned a few times already, 40-year-old Rangana Herath is bowing out after this match.

He's Test cricket's last link with the 20th Century, having made his debut against Australia in September 1999. Here he is dropping Michael Slater in that match. Sorry, Rangana.

England are going to be all out soon, aren't they?

    I'm off for some cereal.

Here's Tom Rostance, back to take you through the final session.

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on The Cricket Social

The biggest culprit is the captain. He's too good. When he plays in that fashion, frantic, it sends a signal to the rest of the team that this is how to play. He hasn't sent the right message to his team.

He doesn't need to take so many risks. Just sit in a bunker and play your shots when you can.

Joe Root is so good that he should calm down, bat for a long time. Look at how Ben Foakes has batted, he hasn't danced down the pitch he has manouvered the ball into spaces. High-class Test match batting.

The thing with Root's dismissal is that it's easy to criticise in hindsight - but when he'd scored a century in the warm up and was 25 from 25 in this match playing aggressively, not too many people were telling him to rein it in.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan is a lot happier at tea.

After England lost five wickets in the opening session he said their risky approach was like playing against Barcelona with now centre-halves.

Foakes has batted calmly. He has put away the bad balls, worked one and twos and blocked well.

  13. Tea - Eng 199-6published at 59 overs

    Foakes 49, Curran 14

    And that is indeed tea.

That's a decent session for England. They have added 86 runs for the loss of one wicket.

Ben Foakes has shown the way on debut.

  15. Eng 197-6published at 58.3 overs

The game slows down as Sri Lanka rearrange the field. This could be the last over before tea.

  16. Eng 196-6published at 58.1 overs

This could be Ben Foakes' best shot so far. Suranga Lakmal drifts a little wide and Foakes plays it late and guides the ball between point and gully for four.

That makes the debutant England's top scorer today. He's two away from a fifty on debut.

  17. Eng 192-6published at 58 overs

    Akila 16-2-74-0

Curran really does look like he's been swimming in the sea behind the stand which is currently at extra cover. He now looks like he has a plan to defend against Akila. Curran blocks five deliveries and then kicks away another.

We have five minutes to go until tea.

Here come all the Test match batsmen texting in their critiques from the comfort of their sofas. It's obvious that the quality of the warm-up games is severely lacking, an issue that threatens Tests more so than one-day cricket IMO.

  19. Eng 192-6published at 57 overs

I have no idea who would miss out when Bairstow returns if Foakes earns himself a place in this innings. Are we then back to the problem of wanting Joe Root at three, Bairstow four, Stokes five, Buttler six and Foakes seven? Let me know what you think.

Lakmal is continuing but doesn't look as threatening as he did earlier. There wasn't much swing this morning but just a little bit of nip.

  20. 'Room for all three keepers'published at 08:58 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

    Alec Stewart
Ex-England captain on The Cricket Social

    Ben FoakesImage source, AFP

If there is one criticism of Ben Foakes. it's that we would want him to score more hundreds once he is set. He is well placed now.

When you play three spinners on a pitch that spins more and more you want your best keeper behind the stumps and that is Ben Foakes. He's got an opportunity and now he has to show what he is about.

The selectors will have a real problem once Jonny Bairstow is fit again. There is room for all three - Foakes, Bairstow and Jos Buttler.

England are so lucky to have so many all-rounders.
