They were much more excitement behind the stumps than Chris Woakes was.

  3. Ire 149-7published at 44.2 overs

A half-appeal by Chris Woakes as Kevin O'Brien chases a leggy delivery, and Jonny Bairstow goes up, convinced there's a nick on that.

Woakes doesn't like it, though, and Joe Root opts against sending it upstairs.

Seventeen wickets in a day, England bowled out for 85, Ireland collapsing but still having a lead...

    Test cricket is great.

Credit to England for fighting their way back into this. They stayed calm, kept bowling and got that chance.

I'm enjoying this new 4-day Test match format. Seems to bring an urgency to things. Bring it on.

Sam Curran has got this knack today - it wan't the greatest ball he's bowled. Adair dragged it on - it's an indication of how slow this pitch has played. England are fighting back.

    WICKETpublished at 43.1 overs

    Adair b S Curran 3 (Ire 149-7)

    ...and Sam Curran strikes!

Mark Adair tries to pull a shortish delivery from Curran and he ends up dragging the ball onto his stumps, which go splat. There was absolutely no pace behind that, and Adair was through the shot too quickly.

This England side is far too inexperienced to be going into an Ashes series for my liking. I'd have given Gareth Batty a call-up today, career-best bowling of 8-64 against Warwickshire earlier in the season and had plenty of red-ball cricket this season unlike half the England team. After all, Tim Murtagh proved age is just a number earlier.

While the players take a drink, here's how the last Irish wicket fell.

  15. Ire 149-6published at 43 overs

    Lead by 64 runs

Kevin O'Brien plonks the ball down into his pads as Chris Woakes starts his latest over, before he's alert enough to call Mark Adair through for a quick single.

Woakes is bowling smack at the stumps, spearing down a yorker than Adair jabs away from his stumps, before a leggy delivery is worked away for a single.

A double change for England - Chris Woakes is replacing Olly Stone, who struck twice in an over a little earlier.

Russell Moore: Of course, the prospect of rolling out Ireland today also brings about the prospect of an England batsman being out twice on day 1 of a Test match... any takers? Has this happened before?

  18. Ire 147-6published at 42 overs

    O'Brien 13, Adair 2

Ooft, almost a horrible run out as Mark Adair comes flying up the pitch from the non striker's end and realises Kevin O'Brien hasn't moved a muscle. Joe Root shies from point but just misses, and Adair slides his bat home.

A dabbed single is all Ireland can work from the over.
