The skipper is having a chat with umpire Chris Gaffaney. It's a matter of time. I'd have at least one more over from Jack Leach.

I dont mean to go on, but why does Root think that he is a better wicket-taking option than someone who averages under 10 at this ground?

    Jamie (again)

I don't think it is going to be too much longer before they call it off.

Amazingly, with 15 overs left and this game meandering towards a draw, we're going to have a drinks break.

Lbw is on the cards if Head keeps playing back and it doesn't bounce.

Michael Holding has just described Joe Root's bowling as "right-arm optimistic." A hero.

Joe Root is probably thinking he will rest his seamers now. He is going to have a go from the Pavilion End and I think we are only two or three overs from them shaking hands.

  8. Aus 118-3published at 32.2 overs

Short and thrashed through backward point for Marnus Labuschagne! Only a superb dive by Jack Leach stops it racing away for four.

Oh, that'll be four though! Travis Head hops back and carves four through the covers.

Yep, the draw is lurking - Joe Root is bowling himself.

Jack Leach has proved this week that England have to give him a run of games. He's not a Murali or Warne but England should give him a run to see if he can become that dependable holding bowler.

We're drifting towards handshake time, as Jack Leach whirls his way through another very tidy over.

He's been such a good foil for the seamers in this match. He'll do well at Headingley.

Oliver Metcalfe: The only thing that I’m enjoying about this batting right now is that an anagram for Labuschagne is Chub Lasagne.

Whatever happens with Smith you'd have this kid in, surely? Labuschagne at three and Smith four.

A tidy, uneventful maiden from Ben Stokes.

Mitch Starc is doing the drinks run! I'd forgotten he wasn't actually playing. Australia could have done with him this morning...

What I like about Archer is he is appealing from deep square leg for lbw. He's a genius this kid.

Down goes Labuschagne for the sweep but he misses, and there's a half-hearted yell for an lbw that pitched outside leg stump.

Another sweep, another miss, another rap on the pad ends the over.

I don't know why Joe has changed the field, surely he doesn't think Australia can get this target.

Four! Lovely for Marnus Labuschagne, getting down early and sweeping Jack Leach into the vacant space in the deep.

Leach's response is an absolute beaut that spits and bounces at the batsman, and Jonny Bairstow does well to take it at face-height.
