A bouncer from Josh Hazlewood, sharp, and Rory Burns gets into a muddle. He tries to duck it and the ball cannons into his shoulder and into the hands of Matthew Wade at short leg.
Ouch.
A run!
A firm push from Joe Denly and he gets a standing ovation from the party stand as England get off the mark.

That was way too wide and was not the right length to play the shot. It was nervy from Denly.
Joe Denly pushes forward and he's beaten on the outside edge by a beauty from Josh Hazlewood! That is so, so close to taking the edge.
What are you doing, Joe?! He's drawn into a needless, flat-footed waft outside his off stump, somehow avoiding nicking behind to Tim Paine.

When's the shipping forecast back on? I enjoyed that bit.

Oh!
Joe Denly leaves his first ball from Josh Hazlewood and for one, horrible moment, it looked as though it would bowl him. In fact it's smacked him on the inside of the thigh.
Well, no runs came from it, but it wasn't testing enough from Mitchell Starc.
Here's Josh Hazlewood, a man whose radar very rarely goes awry...

Make the bowler bowl to you. Then you will get one on your legs.

It is nice pace from Starc but too wide. You can bowl as fast as you like out there.
A bit too wide from Mitchell Starc, the ball tailing towards first slip, but it's rollicking through at a healthy 89mph.
Hmm. Starc hasn't quite found his radar yet. David Warner has got a massive grin on his face at slip. I suppose it's nice for him to be out and about after spending two days sat watching in the dressing room.

What the big deal? Post 600 and declare with a nifty little lead setting us up for the win.
Lee in Halifax.

Swing and pace for Mitchell Starc and Rory Burns lets it go past his off stump.

The crowd has thinned but those left give Rory Burns and Joe Denly a warm reception as they make their way to the crease.
Rory Burns will face the first ball.
Mitchell Starc is prowling...

Marnus Labuschagne has just spilled one at second slip during catching practice and has hurt his right hand a bit.

Jofra Archer was nothing like the Jofra Archer we know. Stuart Broad bowled really well and Leach bowled well. Overton tried hard but I thought Woakes should play. In the last two Tests Joe has gone off him and left him at fine leg grazing like a cow.
The conditions miserable but some of field placings and bowling were poor. They haven't found a way to get Steve Smith out.
Even if England bat well they can't win. If they don't get Steve Smith out cheaper they won't win at The Oval either.
About a quarter of the pitch is already in shadow from the party stand. England have got just under an hour to see out tonight.
Not ideal if you're Joe Denly and opening the batting for the second time in your Test career...
