Not Jason: If I was Stokes I'd be furious after his heroics last Test England have been an absolute shambles today bar Broad. Lazy, not concentrating & not good enough application. Stokes kept them in the Ashes & this is the response. This could be over by 2morrow night

There was a run out chance at the end of that Joe Root over, but it was a poor throw from Jason Roy and Root ended up breaking the stumps with his arms as he tried to collect the ball.

Sort of sums up the day, really.

The no-ball Jack Leach bowled was his eighth in first-class cricket. He has bowled a no-ball once every 324 overs.

  4. Aus 479-8published at 124 overs

Mitch Starc goes slogging but he can only pick up a single to Jason Roy at cow corner.

Starc carries on trying to smack every ball into oblivion but he can't reach a delivery from Joe Root that turns out of the rough. England's left-handers are not going to enjoy this.

What should be worrying for England supporters is Jofra Archer has been out of sorts. He has looked tired. After this match there is only three days before the next one at The Oval.

Before this match Steve Smith averaged over 63. It would take 15 tests of him batting twice each match and getting 0 in every innings for his average to drop below 50. 50 being the benchmark of a world class career. Epoch defining player.

Everyone's looking over their shoulders, but Tim Paine is unmoved...

And in what has been my favourite innings of the day, Mitchell Starc pushes a single to go a 49-ball half-century.

  9. Aus 476-8published at 122.1 overs

Nathan Lyon uppercuts Jofra Archer over Jonny Bairstow's head and just gets a single, which does not impress Jofra.

England's attitude today has been woeful. Look beaten since the start of the day. They have wasted the glorious chance given to them by Ben Stokes.

Play can go on until 19:12 BST tonight, so Australia will probably want an hour's crack at England?

It is not a good moment for the opening batsmen. They are watching the clock, watching the dressing room for the declaration and trying to get their minds right for batting.

These runs lift the whole Australia team.

Turns out this is how you get Steve Smith out...

  14. Aus 474-8published at 122 overs

Three runs are all that Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon can work from this Joe Root over. That genuinely feels like a victory at the minute.

Well, Australia are all in their whites up in the dressing room.

This could be the last over...

At this stage as a skipper you just say "spread out". The ball could go anywhere.

That's Mitch Starc's third six of the match. He's on 48 from 44 balls. My word.

  18. Aus 464-8published at 120.5 over

Jofra sends an 89mph throat ball down to Mitch Starc, who ducks it. I imagine that'll be repaid in kind at some point in the next day.

Oh! Starc swings, swings hard and beats an astonishing dive from Jos Buttler at third man to get... well, is it four or six? Has it gone over the ropes?

  20. Aus 463-8published at 120.2 overs

Jofra Archer will continue after drinks, and bounces Nathan Lyon first up.

Lyon uppercuts his next delivery for a single down to Rory Burns at third man.
