England tend to play better when they get their noses in front. I don't have as much concern in this position as I would've done had Australia got close to level with 294.
There was even time for drama right at the end when England had to bat four overs in their second innings.
Joe Denly was dropped and Rory Burns overturned an lbw dismissal on review.
Both openers survived until the close.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get more drama tomorrow.

We gave Jofra Archer stick in the first innings at Old Trafford but he got his paces back up in the second innings and he did so again today.
He needs to be the real point of difference with his pace - no one else in this team is capable of bowling that fast.
England need to keep telling him to get those paces up. And if it needs to be shorter spells, then so be it.
And once again Jofra Archer will take a fair amount of the headlines for England. It's remarkable to think he started the summer with many doubting whether he should be in the England set-up.
By the end today he was leading the attack.
He took 6-62 to clinch his second Test five-wicket haul in just his fourth match.

You can talk about whether Sam Curran should have played earlier in this series but the question always is who does he come in for?
They went with Jason Roy and he's missed out here, allowing them to play two all-rounders.
Chris Woakes had earned the right to start this series.

The number four batsman has top scored in all nine innings for Australia in this series.
In the three innings Steve Smith was out, Marnus Labuschagne top scored in his place.
No other team in Test history have had a run of over five innings in which the number four batsman has top scored.
Steve Smith stood firm again today but this time there was to be no century.
He was out for a measly 80, his lowest score of the series.
Australia batsman Marnus Labuschagne, speaking to TMS: "We came here today looking for a really solid batting performance and obviously we didn't do that but haven't been at our best in this Test and we're still in the contest.
"The intensity definitely has not dropped. It's hard to say that when our play on the field maybe reflects that. But we came to win the Ashes and we really want to do that.
"We don't want to just retain the Ashes. We have to come out tomorrow 100% on and ready to take any chance.
"I'm feeling alright with my batting. But today was frustrating, I got a start in a big moment but we couldn't build that really big partnership. Runs is the only currency and I need to get more.
"Everybody in our line-up is a class player. Those guys will put runs together in the second innings.
"We know with conditions over here it can happen real quick. It can start swinging and you get that second hit so we have so many opportunities to get back in the game."

That spell with Curran and Jofra Archer was exceptional.
That was the best Curran has bowled for England. He wants to take a wicket every ball and we keep telling him you can't do that, you have to set the batsman up.
He stuck to his lengths and lines very well today, the best he's done for some time.
England all-rounder Sam Curran, speaking to TMS: "It was really nice to be playing again, it has been a frustrating summer on the sideline but to play at my home ground is really special and getting some wickets for the team is the main thing.
"The bowlers had a great day on a pretty good wicket for batting. Joe and Burnsy got through there at the end and hopefully we can bat them out of the game.
"I just had to wait my turn and luckily it came. It's been great to be watching Jofra, Broady, Woakes and Craig bowling so well in the series.
"We need to bat as long and as big as possible because that's a good wicket. There is a bit of rough on the wicket so hopefully it starts spinning from straight as well.
"Any time you get in good rhythm, you charge in a bit more and hit the crease harder. I just really wanted to contribute."

Sam's batting was frenetic yesterday and it showed a bit of nerves and how difficult it is coming in against this Australia pace attack having been out of international cricket for a while.
He is a game changer. You saw it last year against India. When he gets in a rhythm, swinging the ball both ways, he can really impact the game.
England all-rounder Sam Curran, speaking to Sky Sports: “It is was really nice [to be playing]. It has been a different summer to last year for me but it is really nice to be involved in an Ashes series. I would have liked to have been playing but to be involved in every Test has been a nice learning curve.
“When the crowd is going you get that bit of adrenalin and you don’t feel stiff. Jof is a great example. To bowl 24 overs was unbelievable. It was a really enjoyable battle bowling against the best batsman in the world.
"The wicket is pretty flat. It is a placid pitch. To bowl them out for what we did was a great effort. Tomorrow hopefully the sun is shining again and we can get nice runs on the board."

Sam Curran has four chances to impact a Test - two with the bat, two with the ball.
He's already done it with the ball today and might do it with the bat in this innings. If the ball is not swinging, you can take him off. He's a dasher with the bat and will sometimes fall cheaply like in the first innings, but then other times will score vital, quick runs.
England have missed a trick not playing him more in this Ashes.
The first two sessions were gripping but England really came to life in the evening.
Sam Curran bowled brilliantly after tea. He was on a hat-trick at one point and finished 3-46 on his return to the team.
It left plenty of England fans wondering where he had been all summer.

Apart from Smith and Labuschagne that was a disgraceful batting performance by Australia.
Once again it was Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschange who steadied Australia.
For a while they had England fans worrying but this time it was only a partnership of 69 between the pair.
Jofra Archer dismissed Labuschagne for 48.
