I can almost feel the frustration of New Zealand suporters and Colin Munro as well. We know what form he has been in, his skilset is more than capable of dominating attacks. He got in and then got himself out again.

You just feel like an opener from any of the top teams will go on and get a big score after starts like this.

    Munro c Hassan b Aftab 22 (NZ 41-2)

    Aftab strikes again!

The right-arm quick was just changing ends.

It's a loose-ish delivery and Colin Munro tries to upper-cut him but only picks out Hamid Hassan at third man who takes a relatively simple catch.

It's a critical game for New Zealand because they have some really tough games coming up and they need to go into them with three wins.

They may need to really push on and boost their run rate too.

  4. NZ 39-1published at 7 overs

    Munro 21, Williamson 14

Some of the fielding in this tournament so far has been sublime. Some of it has been woeful. This falls into the latter category from Hamid Hassan.

Colin Munro has another swipe that flies down to the third man region and Hassan is just stood still, not prepared for the spin, and completely misses his pick-up. Fortunately for the war-painted bowler the ball cannons into his knees and he manages to restrict them to a single.

That's better from Kane Williamson! His second boundary comes through a gorgeous drive.

There was plenty of traditional music and dancing going on during the interval earlier on from the Afghanistan fans.

A fair few may well have missed that Martin Guptill wicket at the start of the innings such was the fun that was seemingly being had.

One thing that's really characterised this World Cup so far has been the sheer numbers of Afghanistan fans who have come to watch their games.

They're winning over plenty of neutral fans both on and off the pitch with their style, it's fair to say.

  7. NZ 34-1published at 6 overs

Kane Williamson picks up his first boundary. It's a streaky one, though. Hamid Hassan gets one to nip back and it takes the Kiwi captain by surprise and an inside edge flies over the stumps and away to the fence. He doesn't look at his fluent best at all.

Simon Mann is infuriated by the fact he's called for a drink. 'Get on with the game' he cries.

A leg side wide follows as six runs come from over.

The quiet start has been down to the bowling plans to Kane Williamson. They have starved him of any width, and been just back of a length so he can't get forwards to it.

All he can do is work it to the leg side for a single.

Good tight over again from Aftab Alam with just a couple of singles added to the total.

Here's how Afghanistan dismissed Martin Guptill from the first ball of New Zealand's chase.

Over in Cardiff, England have just bowled Bangladesh out to win by 106 runs.

You can follow the reaction to that win with Matt Henry over here.

  12. NZ 26-1published at 4 overs

Colin Munro is living a bit of a charmed life so far in this innings.

This time a huge leading edge flies between gully and backward point and down to third man for a single.

That's better though! After Kane Williamson drops a single square, Munro bisects the off side field with a beautiful cover drive through point to pick up his fourth boundary.

    Bryan Waddle
    BBC Test Match Special

When this Afghanistan team starts playing Test cricket they will get greater opportunities. We've seen the talent on show, they are even better equipped than in the last World Cup four years ago.

I've heard of a lot of academies in Afghanistan where parents are paying to send their children to learn all about cricket and be schooled. Can only be good for the side.

  14. NZ 20-1published at 3 overs

Aside from the over-pitched delivery for the boundary it's a good second over from Aftab Alam with just a wide and leg bye added to the total.

  15. NZ 19-1published at 2.2 overs

    Shot!

Bryan Waddle told Aftab Ali not to bowl there to Colin Munro and that's why as he's punched back down the ground for another boundary.

Word coming from the Afghanistan team is that Rashid Khan is not feeling too well in the dressing room.

He can be reassessed again in around 45 minutes, but already it's appearing highly unlikely he'll bowl in this match.

That's a huge blow for his team in this game. It may also put his participation in their next game against South Africa next Saturday in doubt.

    Thanks Tom.

You do wonder how interesting this could have been if Afghanistan had managed to post in the region of 220.

  19. NZ 14-1published at 2 overs

Good ball! Hassan beats the outside edge of Colin Munro, almost a genuine nick. Munro then opens up his shoulders and heaves hard at a wide one, looks like four but it's smartly fielded by Noor Ali Zadran.

  20. Rashid Khan fails concussion testpublished at 18:08 British Summer Time 8 June 2019

We saw how Afghanistan's Rashid Khan took a nasty blow to the head as he was dismissed by Lockie Ferguson earlier. He looked dazed as he walked off the field and he hasn't come on for the start of the New Zealand innings because he has failed his first concussion test. He will be reassessed and, if cleared, can come back on.
