Lockie Ferguson deserved those four wickets he's taken. He looked threatening most of the time.

He's showing a range of skills and no-one in the New Zealand camp really thought he could do that so it's good timing.

It was a good tumbling catch in the end.

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 41.1 overs

Hashmatullah c Henry b Ferguson 59 (Afg 172 all out)

What a good catch! A very good innings from Hashmatullah Shahidi comes to an end, miscuing a fast ball from Lockie Ferguson over his own head, it could go for four but Matt Henry picked it up early and ran in hard from the fence to take a tumbling catch just above the turf.

New Zealand will need 173 at just 3.46 an over.

Probably one of the loudest rounds of applause of the game so far as Hamid Hassan plays a fantastic leave to that last ball from Trent Boult!

Today, Afghanistan have broke their record first, fifth and 10th-wicket partnership in World Cup cricket.

  7. Afg 172-9published at 41 overs

Trent Boult had taken a wicket in every World Cup game he'd played in - but not today. He's bowled himself out, 0-34 from his 10, and well played Hamid Hassan for surviving five balls there.

  8. Afg 172-9published at 40.1 overs

Hashmatullah middles a glorious sounding shot but it only goes for one and he takes the single off the first. Not sure that was wise...

This is starting to get a bit frustrating for New Zealand. They'll want to wrap this up.

  10. Afg 171-9published at 40 overs

    Hassan 7, Hashmatullah 58

As Norcross says, there was a proper hoik which didn't connect from Hassan, but he does work a clever single and Hashmatullah does likewise from the last to stay on strike.

More importantly, a man in the crowd has brought his dog with him. YES.

You could hear the sound of bat hitting fresh air from here!

  12. ouch!

    Afg 169-9published at 39.3 overs

Hashmatullah was hit on the hand by the last ball of the last over and after some treatment, he mistimes a push into the off side and it's one of those which jars and rattles the handle all the way through your forearms. Ouch indeed.

He gets a single but can't get the two he was after. That puts the number 11 on strike.

Well, one positive for Afghanistan - this is now the longest they've managed to bat for in their three games so far.

There was plenty of smash, bang and clatter of wickets falling against Australia and Sri Lanka and all a bit too quickly to take advantage of the 50-over allocation.

This last wicket stand has now just about edged them past the 38.2 overs in which they scored 207 against Australia.

That was splendid timing. It wasn't a great ball but he smoked it.

  15. Afg 168-9published at 39 overs

Trent Boult looks for the yorker but it's just a full toss and Hashmatullah is good enough to cash it in, driving powerfully away for four.

This late resistance will be frustrating for the men in black.

    The crowd are oddly quiet.

  17. Afg 163-9published at 38.3 overs

    Boult 0-28

That's one way to get out of the way of a bouncer - Hashmatullah just throws himself to the floor and nearly splatters his stumps in the process. Elegance, no. Entertainment, very much so.

Trent Boult is not happy with some of these false strokes.

It's been a bit more like baseball from the batters in the last few overs.

  19. Afg 163-9published at 38 overs

Hamid Hassan is almost bounced out by Lockie Ferguson but he doesn't get a glove on it. Ferguson spears another one into his rib cage and he fends it down and safe.

That was 89mph. Pretty well played to be honest.

    Well batted, Shahidi.

This half-century rearguard, now with some added late-order pizzazz, has given the Afghanistan fans plenty to cheer.
