So, the opening day of the 2019 County Championship is done and dusted.

Sadly there was no play possible between Somerset and Kent, but Notts new boy Joe Clarke helped himself to an unbeaten century against Yorkshire, and Hampshire's Sam Northeast could follow his lead after closing on 94 not out against Essex.

Bowling performance of the day was Leicestershire paceman Tom Taylor's career-best 6-47 against Sussex, while Durham's Chris Rushworth dismissed Luis Reece with the first ball of the match at Derby.

What will day two have in store? We're not clairvoyant,so that question can't be answered - but we will be here again from 10:30 BST to keep you up to date with all the action.

Jason Holder's single is the final scoring stroke of a satisfactory opening day for Northamptonshire against Middlesex at Wantage Road.

The West Indies skipper reaches stumps on 36 not out, but the main innings of the day were played by Alex Wakely (76) and Adam Rossington (67).

Middlesex seamer Tim Murtagh claimed 4-43 and there was a wicket each for Toby Roland-Jones - his first in the Championship for almost a year - and Steven Finn.

We must again stress that it is not a Championship match, but Lancashire and England opener Haseeb Hameed has reached a double century against the Loughborough students.

This surely can do him nothing but good as he looks to put a nightmare 2018 behind him and rediscover the form that earned him three Test caps two years earlier.

He struck two sixes and 30 fours before reaching 200 at the Haselgrave Ground in Loughborough with a single off left-arm spinner Elliot Hooper.

A brilliant performance from Joe Clarke (109 not out) helps Nottinghamshire close in a strong position at Trent Bridge - he has Tom Moores (11 not out) alongside him.

Ben Slater scored 76 to give Notts an excellent start alongside Ben Duckett (43), but it is undoubtedly Clarke's day on his Championship debut for the county after joining from Worcestershire.

Steve Patterson and Duanne Olivier took two wickets apiece for Yorkshire, with Matthew Waite taking the other.

Bowlers dominated the opening day at Hove with 15 wickets falling, and promotion hopefuls Sussex hustled out in under 45 overs.

Tom Taylor's career-best 6-47 undermined the home side's hopes of a decent first-innings score, but Sussex signing Mir Hamza then claimed 3-36 in an impressive new-ball spell.

The umpires took the players off for bad light with 11 overs remaining, interrupting a 72-run partnership between Leicestershire's Lewis Hill and Harry Dearden, the highest of the game so far, and quickly decided there would be no resumption.

Hill will start day two 40 not out, with Dearden on 26.

Nottinghamshire are closing in on a very good opening day to the County Championship season, with just three overs left to play and Joe Clarke 106 not out.

Yorkshire on the other hand will know if they can get rid of him in these last 15 minutes, it leave things fairly even.

Tom Moores is the man at the other end, by the way, he has 11 from 67 balls. Dogged.

Notts 317-5 v Yorkshire

Well played Joe Clarke! The Nottinghamshire batsman clips off his pads for four and has the first County Championship century of the season, and in his first Championship match for Notts as well.

He hasn't given Yorkshire a sniff during 165 deliveries and 221 minutes, with the only faint hope an lbw appeal from Steven Patterson around an hour ago.

The former Worcestershire man's shown excellent patience and produced some superb strokeplay, hitting 16 boundaries all around the wicket.

Hampshire batsman Sam Northeast must wait until day two to try and complete a season-opening Championship hundred for Hampshire after bad light ended play 21 overs early at the Ageas Bowl.

Northeast struck a six and 12 fours in reaching 94 not out, backed up by Aiden Markram's 63 and a richly entertaining 76 off 66 balls by Rilee Rossouw, during which he cleared the rope four times.

Earlier in the day, skipper James Vince looked comfortable in his new opener role before falling lbw to the last ball before lunch after making 40.

Hampshire have three bonus points, with just one so far for 2017 champions Essex, for whom Matt Quinn (2-63) was the most successful bowler.

Derbyshire got to within three runs of a batting point, which earlier in the day hadn’t looked likely, when they lost two wickets in the first three balls of the match.

But they recovered from 68-5 at lunch thanks to some spirited work from Harvey Hosein. However, with his last partner at the other end, Hosein was run out on 78, the victim of a great piece of fielding in the covers from Ben Raine.

Hosein had put on 56 for the sixth wicket with Matt Critchley (24) and 50 for the seventh with Anuj Dal (17).

Durham had 21 overs to bat and had a couple of scares with a big appeal for caught behind first ball from Ravi Rampaul against Gareth Harte. Alex Lees was also dropped on none in the slips in the sixth over off Tony Palladino’s bowling before Harte was caught off Reece for 14.

Joe Clarke is moving towards a century on his Nottinghamshire County Championship debut and there are few signs of him getting out.

Notts have passed the 300 mark now with Tom Moores making very slow progress at one end, leaving it all to Clarke who's entered the nervous 90s after back-to-back boundaries since the below clip.

This pair have now shared a 50 partnership as well, making light work of the second new ball.

It's not a Championship game, but it's still worth keeping tabs on events at Loughborough where Haseeb Hameed has now reached 150 not out for Lancashire.

Keaton Jennings, the man currently occupying one of the two opening positions in the England Test team, fell for 31 earlier in the day.

With 21 overs remaining in the day's play, umpires Neil Mallender and Martin Saggers decide the light isn't good enough to play on at the moment.

Sam Northeast is 94 not out after taking a single off Ravi Bopara, with partner Liam Dawson on 10.

It's been Hampshire's day so far. Let's hope they make it back out to the middle.

Notts opener Ben Duckett has joined the commentary team at Trent Bridge and is reflecting on his own innings of 43, which came from just 51 balls.

"It was a very frustrating way to get out to be honest. I did all of the hard work on a very nice wicket to bat on, so it's disappointing to not go on and get a big score but there's always the second innings.

"One ball bounced a bit more than I expected. The edges are too good on bats these days! I tried to hit it along the ground bit it flew off in the air to long leg and I was out, I wouldn't actually change what I did.

"That's the only thing you notice about the pitch, there's definitely some bounce there, not really any sideways movement. But yeah, disappointing to only make 43."

A quick update on events at Derby, where Harvey Hosein was the last man to go for the home side, run out for 78. Ben Raine and James Weighell each took three wickets for Durham, who are 8-0 in the fifth over in reply, as Derbyshire fell three runs short of a batting bonus point.

The umpires are getting a little bit concerned about the light at the Ageas Bowl as Hampshire's total moves past 300 to earn their third batting point.

One player who certainly won't want to go off is Sam Northeast, whose boundary off Essex paceman Matt Quinn, followed by a single, has taken him to 93 not out.

Steven Finn concedes three fours in one over, two of them by Adam Rossington, who completes a 57-ball fifty in the next over, with a single off one-time Northants loanee Max Holden.

It's been a fine innings thus far, featuring a six and seven fours, and Jason Holder is 23 not out at the other end, with a 50 partnership just four runs away.

Dawid Malan has just turned his arm over to help hasten the arrival of the new ball.

When Rilee Rossouw clicks there's no-one better at punishing bowlers than the South African.

He looked as though he was warming up for the next T10 tournament in Dubai, not just the forthcoming Royal London One-Day Cup.

The 117 run fourth-wicket partnership with Sam Northeast has given Hampshire a strong foothold in the game.

Just wondering if the lack of seam movement today in what appear to be bowler-friendly conditions is down to the smaller seams on the ball this season. It's one to follow up.
