  1. Welcome runs for Hameedpublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

Will this be the season when Haseeb Hameed regains the career momentum lost since he made his Test debut in 2016? England fans hope so - but there's a long way to go. Remember, he averaged only 9.70 in the Championship last summer.

Lancashire start their 2019 Championship campaign against Middlesex at Lord's next Thursday.

  2. Olivier looking for first Yorkshire wicketpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Notts 98-1 v Yorkshire

Duanne Olivier back into the attack for Yorkshire just before lunch.

Can the South African fast bowler add to Steve Patterson's breakthrough and give this opening session a slightly more balanced feel?

He immediately gets one past the bat of Chris Nash, who responds by crashing a drive to the boundary through extra cover next ball and then slashes over the slips for four.

    Plenty going on there.

  3. Vince starts well for Hantspublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Hampshire 57-1 v Essex

James Vince collects the fifth boundary of his innings with a square drive to end Matt Quinn's latest over.

It is astonishing how little effort he seems to put into the stroke - like a right-handed David Gower - and he progresses to 36 not out.

That said, it was well wide of the off stump, in what venerable cricket pundit Kenny Loggins might call Vince's 'danger zone'.

  5. Yorkshire keeping it tightpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Notts 78-1 v Yorkshire

That wicket of Ben Duckett from Yorkshire captain Steve Patterson has really slowed up Notts' progress. Chris Nash is yet to get off the mark after almost 20 minutes at the crease.

During that time, Ben Slater has added just three more runs to reach 31 himself.

Good stuff from Patterson and Matthew Waite to try and strangle the Nottinghamshire batsmen into errors.

  6. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

Sussex have managed to stem the flow of wickets for the time being at Hove, but are still in trouble on 72-5 in the 20th over - with Leicestershire's Tom Taylor having taken 4-21 so far.

Derbyshire are having a similarly tough time of it against Durham, struggling to 50-4 in the 20th, with Alex Hughes and Harvey Hosein the not out batsmen.

Middlesex paceman Steven Finn has proved expensive so far, conceding 24 from his first four overs against Northants, who are 59-1 in the 22nd over.

WICKET: Duckett c Waite b Patterson 43published at 12:20 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Notts 75-1 v Yorkshire

    Yorkshire celebrateImage source, Rex Features

A much-needed wicket for Yorkshire and it's their skipper who's snared it!

Notts opener Ben Duckett will be disappointed with that. A short ball from Steve Patterson that is on to him a little more quickly than he expected and he skies it to fine leg, where Matthew Waite takes a good catch.

Duckett was going so well, 43 runs from just 51 balls with seven boundaries.

He got himself in and you have to say, got himself out.

  8. Tough going for Northantspublished at 12:19 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Northants 43-1 v Middlesex

    Alex Winter
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Very competitive opening hour here with Northants trying to repel a star-studded Middlesex bowling attack. Great to see Steve Finn, who turned 30 on Wednesday, and Toby Roland-Jones back after long injury troubles - both could still have futures with England.

Nothing much has changed at Wantage Road - a lick of paint in the hallway of the Spencer Pavilion - but there is something rather large missing. The big screen was taken down over the winter and it's replacement has yet to arrive so we're making do with a much-smaller temporary screen.

  9. Notts ticking alongpublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Notts 69-0 v Yorks

Notts' Ben Slater guides one to the third man boundary with soft hands to damage Steve Patterson's thus far frugal figures. The Yorkshire skipper's looked dangerous and encouraged the drive more than Ben Coad and Duanne Olivier before him, and Matthew Waite alongside him.

Patterson chose to bowl and unless his team can get a breakthrough soon he might be regretting that decision.

Slater and Ben Duckett going nicely.

  10. wicket

    Hampshire 40-1 v Essex

Matt Quinn celebrates a wicket for EssexImage source, Rex Features

It's the type of dismissal we have seen so often from James Vince - but this time it's Joe Weatherley who drives without adequate foot movement and edges to Tom Westley at slip.

Matt Quinn has the first wicket for Essex at the Ageas Bowl and South Africa Test batsman Aiden Markram has come out for his first Championship innings for Hampshire.

So we have Vince, normally a 3 or 4, opening the batting, and Markram, normally an opener, at 3.

  11. If the cap fits......published at 12:10 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

Interesting. Why does Jason Holder's cap appear to have the 'baggy green' shape famous in Australia, while Luke Wood's doesn't? Maybe Luke just has a large head.

  12. Fletcher a father againpublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Notts 61-0 v Yorkshire

    Luke FletcherImage source, Getty Images

Full marks for timing to Luke Fletcher's other half, and huge congratulations to the whole family.

The Notts fast bowler is in the side at Trent Bridge after not taking the field midway through his side's pre-season match with Cambridge MCCU as he was attending the birth of his second child.

I'm sure he's as relieved as anyone that Notts are batting first, it's a great opportunity for a day's kip in the pavilion.

  13. Durham seize early initiativepublished at 12:07 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Derbyshire 36-4 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle commentator

This was the only ground where there was a toss today but Derbyshire, having chosen to bat, were soon regretting it.

Chris Rushworth finished last season with his 400th championship wicket for Durham and 401 came with the first ball of the match - the first wicket in the country too!

Luis Reece edged to Michael Richardson at second slip before Wayne Madsen lost his off stump to the third ball of the morning to leave Derbyshire 0-2.

When Ben Raine saw off Tom Lace for eight with his third ball the hosts were struggling on 27-3 - and Billy Godleman has now gone for 19, also falling to Raine.

  14. Essex make a changepublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Hampshire 38-0 (11 overs) v Essex

Jamie Porter is taking a break after a five-over spell of 0-21 at the Ageas Bowl. Matt Quinn is on as first change for Essex, but his introduction brings relief for Joe Weatherley, who square cuts a couple of boundaries, the first of his innings. James Vince is on 25 at the other end.

Earlier on, Derbyshire's Luis Reece became the first batsman dismissed in the County Championship this summer when he fell to the first ball of their game against Durham. Mike asks a pertinent question - any thoughts?

  16. Division Two round-uppublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

Sussex are one of the sides fancied for promotion this summer, but they are very much on the back foot against Leicestershire at Hove, with Tom Taylor claiming three wickets to help reduce them to 30-4 in the 13th over. Two came in his last over, with Tom Haines chipping back a return catch and Harry Finch edging behind.

Derbyshire have lost a third wicket against Durham, with Ben Raine having Tom Lace caught at second slip for eight. Billy Godleman is 15 not out in their 36-3 after 12.

Northants are 23-1 in the 14th over in their home game against Middlesex, with Rob Newton the man to go, lbw to Tim Murtagh for seven.

    Notts 54-0 v Yorkshire

    Ben DuckettImage source, Rex Features

It's just easier to deal in boundaries

Nottinghamshire couldn't have wished for a better start. Ben Duckett has played a couple of nice off-drives and three other well hit boundaries all around the wicket (plus an edge through the slips). His partner Ben Slater is happy to just milk the Yorkshire attack, who after getting a bit of joy early on are getting very little now.

  18. Stoneman hits ton against studentspublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

A bit of good news for Surrey and England fans with opener Mark Stoneman reaching a century on the second morning of their match against Durham MCCU at The Oval. Scott Borthwick is only seven runs short of three figures with the county champions 221-1.

  19. Essex pair keep it tightpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

    Hampshire 16-0 (7 overs) v Essex

James Vince's three fours in an over off Jamie Porter have been his only scoring strokes so far. Porter has tightened up his line and length and Sam Cook has been exemplary from the other end with two maidens in his first three overs with the new ball.

Vince's partner Joe Weatherley has four not out from 29 balls faced so far.

Gloomy situation at Tauntonpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 5 April 2019

Somerset v Kent - start delayed

It would be great to bring you some good news from Taunton, where Somerset are waiting to start their game against promoted Kent - but we can't. Apparently, 16.5mm of rain fell overnight. Here's a gloomy tweet from BBC Somerset's Anthony Gibson to put you in the picture.

Let's hope Brian the Somerset cat has found somewhere dry to have a nap.
