    Derbyshire 197 & 334 v Durham 171 & 101-2 - lunch

    Dave Fletcher
    BBC Radio Derby Sport

Matt Critchley’s introduction in the final half hour of the morning session helped reignite Derbyshire’s hopes of victory over Durham.

The leg-spinner had a remarkable first over as his first ball was smashed for six by Alex Lees before he had his revenge by removing Durham’s stand-in skipper and Will Smith in successive deliveries.

Gareth Harte survived the morning session and was 37 not out at lunch, with Michael Richardson on one and Durham requiring a further 260 to win.

  5. Middlesex avoid innings defeatpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Northamptonshire 445 v Middlesex 271 & 176-3

    Kevin Hand
    BBC Radio London commentator

Dawid Malan has led from the front for Middlesex as they look to bat out the final day for a draw at Wantage Road.

The visiting captain has added only 24 to his overnight score but has looked every bit the player England called up to the Test side and his side are now two runs ahead.

Another player hopeful of a recall, opener Sam Robson, lasted only 16 minutes before Nathan Buck found some extra bounce to have him caught at second slip.

Former Northamptonshire loanee Max Holden has also frustrated the hosts by holding a strong seam attack at bay with a great deal of resilience.

  6. 'Outstanding' bowling by Gregorypublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209 & 43-5 - lunch

    Kit Harris
    BBC Sport commentator

This has been an extraordinary comeback by Somerset. A last-wicket stand of 62 gave them momentum, and some outstanding bowling from Lewis Gregory has put the skids under Kent.

George Bartlett was only called into the squad after day one was washed out and the home team realised they weren't going to need a spinner. Unaccustomed to batting at number seven, he found himself required to marshal the tail and he did it like a seasoned pro.

Jack Brooks played some swashbuckling strokes, including a top-edged six over the slips, and then Gregory began his superb spell. In the blinking of an eye, Kent have almost lost sight of a match they had controlled until this morning.

  7. Leicestershire on course to winpublished at 13:09 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Sussex 173 & 308 v Leicestershire 252 & 176-2 - lunch

    Richard Rae
    BBC Radio Leicester Sport commentator

An impressively mature innings from Championship debutant Hasan Azad has helped steer Leicestershire to within sniffing distance of what would be a hugely encouraging victory.

His unbeaten half-century has been characterised by his patience, concentration and unflappability, leaving when possible and playing each ball strictly on its merits.

A 25-year-old graduate in chemical engineering, the left-hander has an approach that looks made for red-ball cricket.

  8. Root and Ballance the keypublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 72-2

After Notts' declaration before play got under way this morning set Yorkshire 448 to win, the visitors will be relieved to reach lunch 72-2 considering they lost both openers early.

England captain Joe Root (22 not out) came to the crease despite hurting his hand fielding last night, and was then hit on the head by a short ball from Stuart Broad. After a lengthy delay and change of helmet, Root steadied himself to build a solid partnership with Gary Ballance, who's unbeaten on 21.

Notts now have two full sessions to get the eight wickets they need to clinch victory, while the White Rose are still 375 runs from pulling off the most unlikely of wins.

Three balls before lunch and Ravi Bopara squeezes a ball from Liam Dawson away for two runs to go to the 30th first-class hundred of his career.

It's been a high-class effort including 12 fours and it took him 168 balls to reach three figures.

Essex go into lunch 132 short of making Hampshire bat again, and Bopara's partnership with Simon Harmer (29 not out) is now worth 71.

Hampshire skipper James Vince sent down a couple of overs before the interval - and has now batted, bowled and kept wicket in the game.

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209 & 41-5

    Lewis GregoryImage source, Getty Images

Three wickets in the space of nine balls for Somerset as Kent spiral further into what looks like a terminal decline.

It's another fine delivery from Lewis Gregory and Azhar Ali swoops at fourth slip to take the catch.

  12. wicket

WICKET Kuhn lbw C Overton 0published at 12:56 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209 & 41-4

Craig Overton relieves Jack Brooks - and strikes in his first over as Kent's captain departs for a four-ball duck.

Somerset are rampant and the lunch break can't come soon enough for the visitors as they try to regroup.

Zak Crawley looks to be the key for them, on 21 not out, with Alex Blake the new man at the crease.

  13. Patel v Root: The rematchpublished at 12:54 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 68-2

    Samit PatelImage source, Getty Images

Around this time yesterday, Nottinghamshire brought on Samit Patel when England captain Joe Root seemed to be comfortably making his way to three figures.

The Yorkshire batsman couldn't resist trying to hit the left-arm spinner into the River Trent and ended up slicing an attempted heave straight to first slip when on 73.

That triggered a major collapse, with Patel taking three wickets in 11 balls to put Notts into a dominant position.

Two overs into Patel's spell today and Root has been a tad more circumspect, although he has slapped Patel to the midwicket boundary once already.

    Watch. This. Space.

  14. wicket

WICKET Bell-Drummond lbw Gregory 18published at 12:50 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209 & 36-3

    We spoke too soon.

Kent lose their third wicket as Daniel Bell-Drummond is pinned in front by the immaculate Lewis Gregory.

The Somerset all-rounder now has 2-6 from his six overs with the new ball.

Heino Kuhn comes out for Kent, with his side 170 away from their target - and it's looking an increasingly tough one.

  15. Kent rebuild in run-chasepublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209 & 28-2

After the shock of losing two wickets for only one run, Kent have settled into their run-chase at Taunton.

Zak Crawley whips Jack Brooks away for four at the start of a new over as he and Daniel Bell-Drummond try to stabilise the innings.

The visitors need another 178 - Somerset need eight wickets. Which way will it go?

  16. Bopara nears centurypublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 220-5

Kyle Abbott digs one in at Ravi Bopara, but the Essex batsman has plenty of time to dab it away past slip for his 12th four and move into the 90s.

He has added 62 with Simon Harmer, who has 29 not out, and Essex need another 141 to avoid an innings defeat. Remember, though, that Adam Wheater will not bat - so Hampshire only need four wickets.

  17. Ballance dealing in boundariespublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 61-2

Having taken more than 30 minutes to get off the mark, Gary Ballance doesn't seem too interested in rotating the strike.

The Yorkshire batsman's onto 19 with almost all of those runs coming in boundaries - a pull, cover drive and leg-glance off Jake Ball, and the latest a slap down the ground after Paul Coughlin dished up a full toss.

Ballance and Joe Root are slowly but surely building a tidy partnership.

Samit Patel's now on for Notts. The left-arm spinner took three wickets in 11 balls yesterday to swing the match in his side's favour.

  18. Critchley checks Durham progresspublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Derbyshire 197 & 334 v Durham 171 & 83-2

The introduction of Matt Critchley's leg-spin brings and immediate reward for Derbyshire as he removes Alex Lees and Will Smith with successive deliveries - Lees departing for 59. Michael Richardson prevents the hat-trick, but that is a major setback to Durham's chances of chasing down 361 to win.

  19. Few chances for Northantspublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Northamptonshire 445 v Middlesex 271 & 160-3

    Alex Winter
    BBC Radio Northampton sport

Northamptonshire are trying to press for what would be a very impressive victory. The weather forecast has improved for them but still a lot to do to get through a high-class Middlesex line-up for a second time.

They did strike in the fourth over of the morning, with Nathan Buck claiming his eighth wicket of the match - a career-best haul - but aside from a huge lbw shout against Dawid Malan, who now has 74, there has been pressure but no chances.

Max Holden rescued Middlesex in their second innings following-on here last season and he could yet help his side escape a desperate position again.

  20. Bopara 'a class apart'published at 12:24 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Kevan James

Ravi Bopara looks a class apart from all the other Essex batsmen (Alastair Cook included) in this game.

Having made 37 not out in the first innings, here he is holding Hampshire up once more with an unbeaten 85.

Only one wicket has fallen of the five that Hants needed at the start of play to wrap up victory.

Bopara has played both innings in a very easy manner. He looks in little trouble.
