    Derbyshire 197 & 334 v Durham 171 & 71-0

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle commentator

Durham used the heavy roller this morning and have made decent progress as a result. Their target of 361 would be their second-highest successful run chase, however.

So far there have been little in the way of scares for the visitors. Alex Lees has led the way with 51. It’s the 37th time he’s reached 50 in first-class cricket and it came in 107 balls, with nine fours.

The wickets taken each day in this game have been on a sliding scale. From 13 on Friday, to 10 on Saturday and just seven yesterday. A sign the wicket has indeed flattened out.

  2. Root in the thick of itpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 45-2

The final day at Trent Bridge started with the news that England captain Joe Root would be able to bat for Yorkshire having hurt his hand fielding last night.

Moments into his innings he was then hit flush on the helmet by England team-mate Stuart Broad.

Now he's scrambled back and dived to avoid being run out by Jake Ball. He seems okay, but stayed down on all fours like a dog for a good while and then stretched his back out. Blimey he's trying to hurt himself.

Notts by the way have now replaced Ball and Broad with fellow seamers Paul Coughlin and Luke Fletcher.

Matt Renshaw played a poor shot in the first innings, and maybe he could have left that one, but it's a second third-slip catch for Somerset and suddenly they look like favourites to win the game.

For some reason, Jack Brooks chooses to sprint off in the direction of square leg in celebration, rather than towards Lewis Gregory, the man with the safe pair of hands.

  4. Essex battle on at the Bowlpublished at 12:16 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 200-5

The 200 comes up for Essex as Simon Harmer puts away a full toss by Liam Dawson for an easy four.

Harmer has 20 and Ravi Bopara is 81 not out - the deficit now is 161.

  5. wicket

    WICKET Dickson c C Overton b Gregory 0published at 12:12 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209 & 0-1

Would you Adam and Eve it.

Somerset have four slips in place for Lewis Gregory's opening delivery, and it's the third of them, Craig Overton, who snaffles a chance provided by Sean Dickson.

Golden duck for him. It's anyone's guess how this one is going to go.

  6. Division Two round-uppublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

Leicestershire have lost their first wicket of the morning at Hove, with Paul Horton falling to Ollie Robinson for 61, but Hasan Azad is still there on 38 and at 130-2, they need another 100 to win.

Middlesex are only 38 short of making Northants bat again, reaching 140-3 after following on at Wantage Road, with Dawid Malan 67 not out.

Durham's openers are still together at Derby with Alex Lees 44 not out and Gareth Harte on 12. They are 59-0, but scoring another 302 to win seems a distant prospect.

  7. Ballance finally off the markpublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 35-2

Granted there's been a delay because of England captain Joe Root being hit on the head by Notts' Stuart Broad, but Yorkshire's number three Gary Ballance was on nought for a very, very long time - 31 minutes to be precise.

He finally troubled the scorers by pulling a Jake Ball long-hop to the boundary and immediately followed that with a single.

You won't be surprised to hear that Root was off the mark pretty quickly. He seems to be unruffled by the early blow to the head, which adds to the hand injury he suffered while fielding last night.

Properly in the wars is Joe.

  8. wicket

WICKET Bartlett lbw Stevens 63published at 12:00 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 243 v Kent 209

So Kent's target at Taunton will be 206.

Darren Stevens ends the 10th-wicket partnership by having George Bartlett lbw as he tries to swing the ball towards square leg - and thereby denies team-mate Mitch Claydon the chance to take 10 in the game. Claydon's 4-66 gives him match figures of 9-112.

Last man Jack Brooks finishes with an unbeaten 35 from 31 deliveries, having added 62 in 8.4 overs with Bartlett, and Somerset's total is far more than seemed likely when they were 111-7 on day three.

It's now up to Brooks and co to do the job with the ball.

By BBC Sport commentator Kit Harris: "Last year, Mitchell Claydon had his season (and his hand) cut short by the kind of washing-up accident which makes us all shudder to imagine. On his comeback, he has scythed through the Cidermen in both innings, his figures of 5-46 and 4-66 representing the best match performance of his long career. What’s more, he hasn’t had to do the dishes all winter. He’s a very contented man."

  9. 6 runs

Maximum for Brookspublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 238-9 v Kent 209

This partnership could be turning the match on its head at Taunton.

Harry Podmore tries Jack Brooks out with a short ball and he puts it away over mid-wicket for six - the Somerset tail-ender now has 33. Perhaps bowling line and length and letting the pitch provide some help might be the better option.

George Bartlett is on 63 at the other end, and he and Brooks - who made a first-class hundred for Yorkshire against Lancashire in 2017 - have now added 60 in seven and a bit overs. Somerset's lead is 203.

  10. ouch!

Broad hits Root flush on helmetpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 25-2

Joe Root and Stuart BroadImage source, PA

Stuart Broad and Joe Root are great mates having played together for England for years, but the former is playing for Notts and the latter is playing for Yorkshire.

Broad's first ball to his Test captain is a brilliant short delivery that Root misjudges and takes flush on the side of his helmet.

A bit of a delay here as the physio is out to check he's okay - which he seems to be - and to change the helmet.

Root gets the all-clear and we're back under way.

  11. Bopara hangs on for Essexpublished at 11:52 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 179-5

Ravi Bopara is still looking good despite the loss of overnight partner Ryan ten Doeschate.

He collects two fours in an over from Fidel Edwards, both steered away through point with excellent timing, and goes to 76 not out.

Simon Harmer has avoided a pair at the other end and has four. Essex are now 179 behind.

WICKET: Lyth b Ball 21published at 11:46 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 24-2

What was I JUST saying about Adam Lyth?! Well it's Notts fast bowler Jake Ball who's profited from Stuart Broad's incessant pressure at the other end.

Like his team-mate, Ball goes around the wicket to the left-handed Lyth who leaves one that he's expecting to move away from him.

It doesn't. It clean bowls him.

To the crease arrives England captain Joe Root with his sore hand and Yorkshire need something special from him.

  13. Brooks frustrates Kentpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 218-9 v Kent 209

Jack Brooks may be enjoying this - but Kent certainly aren't.

Mitch Claydon bangs in a bouncer which he edges over the slips for four, and the next ball flies in the same direction as Somerset's number 11 flails at a wide one.

Brooks is at it again in the next over, bowled by Harry Podmore, as he flashes one away uppishly though backward point and then square cuts for another four to advance to 25 not out.

Somerset's last-wicket pair have added 47 in five overs and the lead is 190.

  14. Broad bamboozling Lythpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 24-1

Notts' Stuart Broad is using all of his skill to tie Adam Lyth in knots. The England fast bowler is bowling around the wicket to cramp the Yorkshire opener for room, but is managing to move the ball away from the left-hander as well.

It's caused a couple of play-and-misses from Lyth, one of which was a whisker from taking his outside edge.

Gary Ballance meanwhile is yet to get off the mark after 15 minutes at the crease.

WICKET Ten Doeschate c sub b Edwards 36published at 11:38 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 158-5

    Controversy at the Ageas Bowl.

Fidel Edwards relieves Kyle Abbott and his second delivery is an away swinger which Ryan ten Doeschate is adjudged to have edged to sub keeper Lewis McManus.

The Essex skipper, who made 36 and put on 64 with Ravi Bopara, doesn't seem thrilled by the decision and stands staring at the umpire for several seconds before reluctantly trudging back towards the dressing room.

Simon Harmer is the new batsman - on a pair.

  16. 50 runs

for George Bartlettpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 199-9 v Kent 209

George Bartlett clips a ball from Matt Milnes through mid-wicket for four, and then goes to 50 from 94 balls with two down to long leg. This has been a mature innings for his side and has at least given them a fighting chance in the game. The lead is 161.

  17. Postpublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

After a bit of footie action before the start of play, Sir Alastair Cook can only sit and watch while his Essex team-mates try and save them from an innings defeat by Hampshire.

The former England captain was dismissed twice by Kyle Abbott on day three - for 50 and eight.

Sir Alastair CookImage source, Rex Features
  18. Division Two round-uppublished at 11:30 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

Nathan Buck has made a breakthrough for Northants by having Sam Robson caught above his head by Jason Holder at second slip - and that's quite a long way up! Middlesex are 123-3, with Dawid Malan still there on 63, and need another 51 to avoid an innings defeat.

No alarms yet for Leicestershire, who are 112-1, chasing a target of 230 to beat Sussex at Hove. Paul Horton has moved on to 60 and Hasan Azad is 31 not out.

Durham face a much tougher run-chase at Derby, where they need 361 to win, and they are 32-0, with the bulk of the scoring being done by Alex Lees, who has 26.

    Notts 408 & 329-5 dec v Yorkshire 291 & 19-1

Yorkshire opener Harry Brook is squared up by a full length delivery from England fast bowler Jake Ball and gets a leading edge to third slip Chris Nash, who does superbly to catch low diving forwards as the ball was dying on him.

It really is a superb delivery from Ball when a batsman is early in his innings, plonking it right in that corridor of uncertainty.

    Nine to go for Notts.

It brings Gary Ballance to the crease for the White Rose. The next man should then be England captain Joe Root, who Yorkshire say is fit to bat despite hurting his hand fielding last night.

  20. Essex skipper leads by examplepublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 8 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 147-4

Keith Barker strays onto leg stump from around the wicket and that's easy for Ryan ten Doeschate, who flicks it down to fine leg for an easy boundary for Essex.

A cover driven boundary three balls later brings up a half-century partnership with Ravi Bopara, who is 65 not out.
