  1. Eng 33-0published at 15 overs

    Burns 24, Sibley 9

The first ball after drinks is driven nicely by Rory Burns through cover point for a couple of runs, before Dom Sibley comes close to nicking a wider Trent Boult delivery.

It's not swinging, so Boult has switched to his cross-seam deliveries, and he beats Sibley with a ball that starts wide and nips back past his off stump.

NZ's lines have been disciplined but very negative. Might be testament to a bland pitch and awful cricket ball, however expected more from the number two team in the world playing at home.

England have gone 62 innings without a century opening stand. Their last was in Chennai in 2016.

An hour gone. England haven't lost a wicket and haven't done anything stupid.

    Excellent.

  6. Eng 30-0published at 14 overs

Colin de Grandhomme is my sort of cricketer. He bustles in, bowls the same lines like he's a human bowling machine, and always seems to snaffle someone out.

He can't tempt Dom Sibley into a flash at a series of deliveries that hug his off stump, and England seem quite content with one run from the over.

It's an important time for the England openers here. They'll feel they've seen off that opening period and made New Zealand make a change but Colin de Grandhomme will challenge the stumps and seems to be getting a little bit of nip.

  9. Eng 29-0published at 13 overs

    Burns 20, Sibley 9

Good from the England opening pair, pushing Trent Boult here and there and taking some sharp singles, before Rory Burns jabs his bat down on a yorker.

Boult drifts onto Burns' pads and gets clipped for a single, before taking a hearty swipe at the turf in annoyance.

Francis Edwards: Sibley will be fine against this pace but with his technique there is no way he could play anything above 90mph. Fortunately NZ left out their only bowler who can bowl that fast!

That's a good piece of work from Trent Boult. I thought it was going to be a pick-up job but there was commitment there, good work!

  12. Eng 26-0published at 12 overs

A leading edge from Rory Burns, getting turned around as he tries to push the ball through the leg side, but the ball goes on the bounce to the fielder at point. Colin de Grandhomme's lack of pace seemed to confuse Burns there.

A bit of leg-side nonsense is flicked away calmly by Burns, and a fine stop by Trent Boult, getting his hand to the ball before launching himself over the rope, stops him picking up four.

Tim Southee is off and Colin de Grandhomme, former housemate of Dom Sibley and my favourite Colin in cricket, is coming on.

I didn't know which way England would go. I thought Joe Denly might open and then one of the youngsters would slot in at three but I think they've rightly given Dom Sibley a chance to open. The right hand, left hand combination is good.

Let's not forget Rory Burns is still bedding himself into Test cricket. He's got this two-Test series and the four-Test series in South Africa to cement his place.

  15. Eng 23-0published at 11 overs

Trent Boult lets out the most extraordinary noise as, once again, Dom Sibley has a little fiddle at the final ball of the over and just avoids sending an edge through to BJ Watling.

Neil Wagner, meanwhile, is busy signing autographs for some kids. One of them has thrown him a mini bat to sign but dropped it behind the fence. Wagner starts to vault the fence, realises there's a ball about to be bowled, waits and then promptly signs a row of bats for the fans.

Rory Burns needed no second invitation. That's the sort of ball you've got to latch onto in Test cricket. You've got to cash in and Burns did it beautifully.

  18. Eng 23-0published at 10 overs

    Burns 15, Sibley 8

Tim Southee becomes the latest bowler to test Rory Burns out with the short ball, but he's not quite got Pat Cummins' pace, and Burns ducks it with ease.

Oh, what a shot that is! Short, sitting up, and Burns just waits a fraction before cutting it through point for four. That came right out of the middle of the bat.

The campaign to have grass banks at all grounds starts here.

Mind you, it rains so much here at times that it wouldn't really work, would it? Be more of a mud slide.

Ben Howard: Don’t want to get ahead of myself but I really like the look of these two opening together....look equally confident with two very unconventional techniques. Burns looking more like a senior pro ball on ball and Sibley totally unfazed by the step up.

Rob: Two things from watching the first half hour. Grounds are decidedly better when they have a grassy bank and Sibley reminds me of Jonathan Trott.
