This should be a three-Test series surely? Second and third ranked in the world. A two-Test series to me feels like it doesn't really matter.

Rory Burns, wisely, leaves the rest of the short balls alone.

Rory Burns chased that, it was brilliant bowling - the double bluff.
Not there, Rory!
Burns hangs back, expecting the short ball, and instead he's treated to a delivery that hangs out off stump and he flaps at a ball that he should be leaving well alone.

New Zealand if anything have toiled a bit so far today. They just haven't quite been precise enough.
I thought the opening bowlers predominately bowled very full, they were looking for movement obviously but they weren't good enough at it. Both Burns and Sibley have a lot of moving parts, there are all sorts of things happening. With those sorts of batsman you need to be precise.
De Grandhomme 7-1-15-1
Nice from Rory Burns, getting down low and larruping a drive through point, but he doesn't get the full meat of the bat behind it and has to settle for three instead.
That's a lovely bit of work from Colin de Grandhomme, teasing Joe Denly's off stump, and Denly does well to resist. Tidy.
In news that is sure to make you feel old, 16-year-old Naseem Shah is about to make his Test debut for Pakistan.
Sixteen! At 16 I was spending quite a lot of time sleeping, being grumpy and dying my hair regrettable colours. Not much has changed, really.

It's proven to be a good decision at the toss. It was a bit of a no-brainer, the weather was good and there was only a gentle breeze.
It's a surface where the ball has come quite lazily off, there's no real pace from it.
Joe Denly is welcomed to the crease by a trademark Neil Wagner bouncer, and Denly ducks it and watches it brush past the grille of the helmet.
Wagner takes a mid-over sit down to retie his shoe laces and Denly lets the final ball go fizzing past his off stump.

April Hall: The fall of the first wicket has caused the cat to throw up on the new sofa. Probably a good time to retire to bed with TMS.

Incidentally, that was a very good catch by Ross Taylor, throwing himself to his right at first slip and getting both hands underneath the ball.

Image source, AFPGood delivery from Colin de Grandhomme. He beat him on the inside edge the ball before but this ball was a lot fuller, moving away, he was trying to play against the angle. With the ball still slightly swinging it took a thick outside edge and it was a smart catch from Ross Taylor.

Very good from the Black Caps bowler, throwing the ball a little wider, and Dom Sibley wants to work it through the leg side. He has to reach for it, playing it with an angled bat, and a tiny bit of away movement helps take the ball straight to Ross Taylor at first slip.

Umpire Dharmasena was unmoved.
Oh, hello! A big shout as Dom Sibley gets a little squared up by Colin de Grandhomme, and there's a big noise as the ball goes through to the keeper.
It's pad, though, and Kane Williamson opts against the review.

Steph: Root must be confused, he’s sat down and not had to worry about batting for over an hour. He should cherish this.

When Neil Wagner bowls his bouncer, his follow-through just goes on and on and on. He almost ends up right in the batsman's face hoping for a bit of engagement but Rory Burns just had his head down.
Neil Wagner is over his period of trying to swing the ball and goes back to what he does best - an angry run up, cheeks puffed out, and testing out the middle of the pitch with the short ball.
Rory Burns ignores what he can, swaying out of the way, and he avoids gloving a ball that follows him down the leg side.
