By no means a flawless day in the field for the Black Caps, with those two dropped chances. But after losing the toss and having to bowl on this pitch they have stuck to their task very well.

It's hard to know who will be happier of the two sides at the end of the day.

England will be disappointed by at least three of their four dismissals I reckon and while they haven't got away from New Zealand they've got a promising platform to build from tomorrow.

The Kiwis catching let them down a couple of times and if Ross Taylor had hung onto Ben Stokes a few overs before the close the day would have a different look about it.

Ollie Pope finishes the day on 18 while Ben Stokes is unbeaten on 67.

I really like what we saw there at the end from Ollie Pope. He saw out the day in style.

Ollie Pope lets the final ball of the day go through to BJ Watling behind the stumps.

No swaying out of the way of that - he latched onto it straight away.

Hello, Ollie Pope! That is a cracking shot.

Tim Southee fires a short ball in towards his head and Pope just crunches him in front of square for another boundary.

    He's up to 18 off 22 balls.

    And the fourth...

Tim Southee hasn't got his line right in this over.

  9. Eng 237-4published at 89.3 overs

Tim Southee has three slips and a gully in for the final over of the day.

Ollie Pope lets the first three deliveries go through to BJ Watling behind the stumps.

  10. Eng 237-4published at 89 overs

Ollie Pope pulls a short one down to fine leg to move to 14 before Ben Stokes safely negotiates the rest of the over.

England have one more over to see out in Tauranga. The sun is still beating down.

This has been a sounding each other out kind of day.

  12. Eng 236-4published at 88 overs

A maiden from Tim Southee. His sixth of the day and New Zealand's 21st. It's been a disciplined bowling display from the Kiwis.

England have two more overs to bat out to leave them in a promising position going into day two.

  13. NZ 236-4published at 87.2 overs

That's nice from Tim Southee as he gets one to nibble past the outside edge of Ben Stokes.

  14. Eng 236-4published at 87 overs

A wayward bouncer from Trent Boult is parried round the corner by BJ Watling to give England a bye.

Boult goes short again but Ollie Pope reads it well and ducks underneath it.

The Surrey batsman then finds the gap past point and picks up another boundary. He's up to 13 off 15 balls now. Useful runs at the end of the day for England.

Jack Leach is doing some shadow batting in the England dressing room.

As much as I'm sure we'd all love to see Jack come out and clean his glasses etc, not tonight, eh?

  16. Eng 231-4published at 86 overs

Just the boundary comes off the over.

England have four more overs to see out.

Ollie Pope has been given a couple of easy balls to hit for four.

There really is a bit of Ian Bell about him.

  18. Eng 231-4published at 85.2 overs

Ollie Pope gets in on the act this time as he flicks Tim Southee through square for his second boundary.

He's been proactive since he came to the crease.

Sixteen off that over for England and Ben Stokes.

The new ball is travelling a bit.
