From @PeterLayzell: "You have to feel sorry for umpires in wet weather like this. The pitches may be covered and so ok but judging the safety of the outfield & run ups is so difficult. People understandably moan about no play but if a fielder is injured then its blame the umpire time! #bbccricket, external"

From saves1990: "Such a shame it's raining at Taunton. From a completely genuine Essex fan. Honestly... #bbccricket, external"

  2. Middx 250-6 v Derbyspublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 18, Roland-Jones 23

Harris gets an outside edge off Reece but the ball bounces in front of keeper Harvey Hosein.

A big swish and a miss from Harris and Reece is grinning. Lots of swing there.

    Maiden over.

  3. Middx 250-6 v Derbyspublished at 12:17 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 18, Roland-Jones 23

A Hudson-Prentice half volley is driven down the ground by Roland-Jones for four.

That ball has gone into the construction site.

A short pull is pulled to the Grand Stand for four more and that's the Middlesex 250.

*really hope Fynn Hudson-Prentice's nickname is Huckleberry

  4. Middx 242-6 v Derbyspublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 18, Roland-Jones 15

Wow. We have sunshine at Lord's. Still no cricket at the Oval - where the outfield is wet.

Reece strikes Harris on the pad but there's no interest in a full on appeal.

Reece bowls wide of off and Harris leaves. Maiden over.

That ball kept a bit low. Fynn Hudson Prentice takes the new ball from the Nursery End.

  5. Mopping up continues at Edgbastonpublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Yorkshire 261-2 v Warwickshire - start delayed

Any sign of play between Warwickshire and Yorkshire following yesterday's wash-out.

    Not at the moment.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore is 165 not out for the visitors - just as he was when play ended on day one.

  6. new ball

New ball taken at Lord'spublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Middx 242-6 v Derbys

Not surprising. Luis Reece is back in the attack.

  7. Middx 242-6 v Derbyspublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 18, Roland-Jones 15

    Conners bowls...

Harris shapes to punch the ball away off the back foot but there's no run.

At the Nursery End Roland-Jones edges Melton through third man for four.

The batsmen trade singles and it all looks a bit easy for them here.

  8. Rain returns at Tauntonpublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Somerset 203 v Essex 25-0 - start delayed

    Frustration.

A second inspection by the umpires has been postponed.

    Only five sessions remain.

Is that enough time for Somerset to force the win they need to pip Essex to the title?

  9. Middx 231-6 v Derbyspublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 16, Roland-Jones 8

Dustin Melton is in the attack. Or "Dusty Melts" as he's known on Twitter.

A short ball is hooked to mid-wicket for one by Roland-Jones.

Harris punches off the back foot through point for four. We're down to one slip now.

The new ball is available in a couple of overs.

We asked you to name the individual you think has been the 'player of the season' in the County Championship. Here's the first, unsurprising, nomination - and we want more of them.

From @ScribblinSeaham: "Simon Harmer (Essex) for being leading wicket taker and his overall performance in all levels of the game. The fact I am Essex born is neither here nor there! #bbccricket, external"

  11. Middx 224-6 v Derbyspublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 11, Roland-Jones 6

Anuj Dal bowls outside off stump and Harris leaves.

Harris is struck on the pad by a straighter one but it's not out. Maiden over.

Roland-Jones tries a flashing drive with no foot movement against Conners and misses.

A single each to Roland-Jones and Harris off the next two balls.

  12. Good news from the Ovalpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Surrey 248-2 v Nottinghamshire

Chris Watts and Martin SaggersImage source, Getty Images

Umpires Martin Saggers and Chris Watts have carried out an inspection at the Oval and play will begin at 13:00 if there is no further rain.

They hope to squeeze in 75 overs before the close.

In case you have forgotten, Scott Borthwick is 109 not out for Surrey, with England's Ollie Pope on 79.

  13. Middx 219-6 v Derbyspublished at 11:48 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 10, Roland-Jones 4

Samuel Conners replaces Luis Reece from the Pavilion End.

Roland-Jones gets off the mark with a couple through cover off a Conners no-ball.

Two more with a push into the off side.

  14. Second inspection coming up at Tauntonpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Somerset 203 v Essex 25-0 - start delayed

Those of you of a certain age may remember comedian Norman Collier, whose act included his impression of a chicken. Looks like umpire Rob Bailey may have been re-enacting that routine at Taunton earlier on.

He will be out there again at midday with colleague Alex Wharf for a second look. Fingers crossed for some good news.

My my, there's a particularly tasty-looking bit of seed.

  15. Middx 214-6 v Derbyspublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Harris 9, Roland-Jones 0

The new batsman is Toby Roland-Jones - who leaves Reece outside off.

Reece has 3-53 now - and he passed the 50 Championship wicket mark yesterday.

Harris plays Dal defensively at first and clips one to the on side but there's no run.

He gets one off the last ball to point as he opens the face of the bat.

WICKET Malan lbw b Reece 72published at 11:34 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Middx 213-6 v Derbys

Dawid Malan looks disgruntled as Luis Reece beats him with on off cutter that jags off the seam and strikes him on the pad in front of middle and leg.

    The umpire raises his finger.

Malan raises his bat to a smallish crowd on his way back to the pavilion.

  19. Middx 213-5 v Derbyspublished at 11:33 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Malan 72, Harris 8

There'll be a pitch inspection at the other London-based Test ground now.

Here at Lord's - Harris drives Dal through the covers for four.

The clouds are dark here but at least they're moving away quickly.

  20. Middx 209-5 v Derbyspublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 25 September 2019

    Malan 72, Harris 4

All change here at Lord's as the Compton Stand is being renovated.

Well, it was before play resumed anyway.

A much better line from Reece in this over with just a couple of runs coming from it.
