South Africa captain Faf du Plessis: "What an advertisement for Test cricket. It's sad to to be on the losing side. All I asked for was a team effort and we fought hard. There has to a winner. Credit to England, they had a little bit more in the tank than we had.

"In big series like these you want two teams to bash it out for five days. The next Test will be exciting.

"What pleases me is that we have found someone who is really good at the top of the order in Pieter Malan. He stepped in and played a great innings.

"From a batting point of view, we're not where we need to be yet."

Stokes has all of the strings to his bow. He has always got some way of being at the forefront of the game. The 72 runs he scored yesterday from 47 balls gave England the extra half an hour they needed today.

  6. 'Stokes is an absolute superstar'published at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2020

South Africa's Quinton de Kock on Sky Sports: "The boys fought really hard. They kept fighting the whole way - congrats to them. We tried to push them. Unfortunately we fell a little bit short."

"It was quite disappointing. Me and Rassie had a good partnership going - we just needed to bat an hour or two I ended up smoking it straight to the fielder."

  9. 'It's been an incredible Test match'published at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2020

England's Stuart Broad on Sky Sports: "It's very special. It's been an incredible Test match. We had to work hard. It was incredibly disciplined from South Africa throughout the day, but we kept saying, one bit of magic, one breakthrough and we can apply some pressure.

"On pitches like that you need abit of luck, and you need a hell of a lot of character and skill."

On the pitch: "We walked off after day three and we throught it might struggle to go into day five. It slowed down a lot and we had to get more creative. Stokes' ininngs yesterday gave us more overs at South Africa - and we needed them."

I've just seen a replay of the Philander wicket. It was an absolute brute of a delivery, one that spat and took the glove. After lying dormant for three days, the Cape Town Crack had the final say.

Rumours are the Crack will be out celebrating with the England fans tonight.

We all know England's record away from home. They have only won five matches in the last 23. Their record is awful. This wins gets Root moving and Silverwood moving.

That is a big moment for England.
